Funded Art Installation Listing
This year the org has provided art grants for 31 art installations. You can review the list here http://www.burningman.com/installations ... grant.html. Half have links to thier project home pages, and many have been proposed and discussed on the eplaya and tribe.
Has anyone had a chance to look them over?
I am really curious to what people think: which ones are exciting, which ones you are most likely to spend time checking out... after all, part of your ticket money is going into funding them.

I did not notice an artist having two projects. From what I heard there was a much higher number of art registrations over last year.sputnik wrote:First, I'm surprised to see one artist get two projects funded, Alien Semaphore and Alien Gesticulation. Perhaps there weren't any other projects that applied. I am interested to see most of these. I like the lawnmower man and the light harp.
The light harp sounds interesting, my engineering head currently salvates over The Machine

Well, there are. I guess you didn't notice. Alien Semaphore and Alien Gesticulation are essentially the same concept of flourescent tubes controlled to move into different shapes. They are both by Hedley Davis of San Jose.spectabillis wrote:I did not notice an artist having two projects. From what I heard there was a much higher number of art registrations over last year.
I guess I'm also dissapointed by the fact that returning projects get funding. There are 4 projects that were present in 04. Sure I liked them, and maybe they're only asking for transportation costs, but still, that's 4 new projects that didn't get funding.
It's going to be alright.
I only skimmed the list through now, but these caught my eye immediately.
Bed in your Head I definitely want to see. "The film documents people awakening from sleep and explaining their dreams." For some reason I find that utterly cool.
The Dicky Box, for obvious reasons.
If Dreamer is half as impressive as it sounds,I'll be damned impressed.
I don't understand half of what the creator of Hypha is trying to say in the description, but I do want to try climbing. Even if it does not sound completely safe...
Light harp might be a fun playground. Likewise Sola. I am a sucker for interactive light/sound pieces. (They once had this exhibition full of them at the local modern arts museum. Boy was I tired after that one...)
"In a final performance the Quixotic Windmill will be lit on fire by knights with flaming lances." Wow. I hope I can see something from the crowd - there's bound to be one... :)
Quite a lot to look forward to, it seems. I will try to check out all the funded art, though, and as much of other pieces I hear about as possible. Installations are a major part of BM for me.
Yeah, the amount of returning projects puzzled me, too; made me wonder if the rest of the applications were really low quality.'
(EDIT: damn the edit functionality, now it takes me ridiculous amount to fix typos after each post, much longer than it took to curse them before editing ;))

Yeah, you should see something, there will be 3 windmills and they will be spread out a bit, so you have more than one chance. You're fanning my desires to finish my model this weekend. Not much time left...Janka wrote:In a final performance the Quixotic Windmill will be lit on fire by knights with flaming lances. Wow. Thats a good point, and for the most part I agree. I think a loose 2 event self-limitation is alright, people loose interest in seeing the same thing but others have thier faves. But it sucks those returning take funds from those first timers.I guess I'm also dissapointed by the fact that returning projects get funding ... that's 4 new projects that didn't get funding.
I did not know you were behind Windmill, good luck with that and look foreward to seeing it.

I am not the idea man. That honor goes to Eric Miller and Ben Flaster. I'm just a builder trying to turn their concept into something that is easy to manufacture here, easy to disassemble, easy to ship and easy to reassemble on the playa (with folks who may not have seen it before). Piece of cake.spectabillis wrote:I did not know you were behind Windmill, good luck with that and look foreward to seeing it.
I'm looking forward to seeing it too.
It's going to be alright.

The one that most interested me was the "Clockworks" piece. Here is the description.
Jason
I am sorry but that just sounds damn cool to me.The twisted and skewed architecture of the ClockWorks rises haphazardly to 34 feet above the playa. At the top of the tower the giant wooden gears of the clockworks slowly turn, powered by two large weights that are wound up daily. A long swinging pendulum inside the tower regulates the beat. Three large bells made from welder's tanks hang inside the tower waiting for clock to strike their song. The clock serenades each hour of the day with a tank bell melody and then chimes out the hour.

Absolutely exciting. That takes a significant ammount of skill and planning to design and build, the complications of which will be obvious when people see it since the workings are exposed.Sandwichman wrote:I am sorry but that just sounds damn cool to me.
edit: I wonder what they do for a living? That sort of experience does not come easily, sort of sounds like the Clock of the Long Now project.
