Wondering if any sound techs can advise me on sound-system components. Our installation has a soundscape, and we'd like to maximize our small budget wisely when purchasing speakers. We'll likely buy two cheap 15" PAs about $140 each.
Part of the soundscape includes a deep bass heartbeat sound triggered by participants' pulse. I'd like people to feel that bass sound. So we are considering adding a subwoofer.
Here's the question: We need to buy cheap subwoofers, and our installation is nearly open air, with no hard surfaces for sound to bounce off. I saw some 15" 300amp cheap subs, but am wondering how far the bass would actually be felt in an open-air setting. Any idea how feat away they'd be effective? Maybe that money would be better spent upgrading the 15" PAs.

You can build a plywood corner for the sub to sit in, to contain/direct the bass. meh
Perhaps you could find one of the DIY Klipsch Horn Bass Bin builds. Originals do in an open field what Klipsch Horns did in the corner of a room. There may be a scaled down versions, that gives you the low sounds but at a closer distance. Time & budget likely precludes this seeing its nearly the end of July.
Or build a sono-tube subwoofer. There's folded and ducted designs, but a long straight tube with a single bass driver is quick and easy, if long.
You're not after fidelity, but something they'll feel.

Order consider one of the car box models.

A 300W sub will barely register at 10 feet in the city proper over the pervasive ambient cacophony of sound.
If you are in deep playa, maybe a couple of those for a 20 or so foot experience.
Remember that subs are power hogs compared to the mains. Logarithmic hearing response and all that crazy maths.
If you can find cheap band pass subs, that will help.
Though the Sonotube standing wave designs are super sexy awesome, they are not efficient one bit. Known for their super fast response and precision. They behave as “free-air” with selective enforcement by the standing wave in the tube.

Potent sound is not cheap, had two of these in camp last year... can you say whoa!!?
