Anyone tried the soft cargo "rooftop storage system&quo

Post by Blonde Iguana » Sun Aug 14, 2005 7:04 am

I don't have a lot of room in my van (and no racks on the roof), so for $20 I purchased a "rooftop storage system" from GI Joe's - a collapsible square bag kind o' thing that fits on the roof, rack or no, and expands to 13 cubic feet. Has anyone used one of these for a road trip? Is it a piece of shit? Will it shred after 12 hours of 70 mph driving? Will it blow off?

I have and have used one. I have a roof rack with a fairing, though, so that probably mitigated wind damage. Hard to tell for sure with as complex as that whoe aerodynamics thing is. I do know that the instructions of the bag said NOT to use it with a fairing.

I packed mine full to bursting with clothes, tents, et cetera and drove from UT to VA (2300 Mi) and then back, without it sustaining any noticeable damage.

Without knowing who manufactured any of these things and thus being unable to compare quality, I drove from North Dakota to New Jersey with a canvas or plastic-coated fabric cartop carrier right on the roof of my car -- no roof top carrier or rack -- hooked to the rain gutters (back in the day when cars had rain gutters). No damage to the roof of the car.

We did drive through some rain, and we didn't take the carrier off to dry -- we should have. Water got between the carrier and the roof and soaked through. Nothing major, but if you do drive through rain or have a rain at BM, I'd suggest taking the carrier off to let things air out and dry.
