Bacon supplies endangered

Post by some seeing eye » Wed May 15, 2019 9:01 am

African Swine Fever Virus doesn't infect humans.

But it is a highly infective hemorrhagic fever in pigs with no fast inexpensive diagnostic test, no vaccine, high mortality rate, spreads easily several ways and the virus particles outside the body can remain virulent for months.

There is a major outbreak in China, and some fraud with infected countries evading export controls.

(there are some inaccuracies in the article - it is not 100% fatal in pigs, but on farms that get it usually all the pigs are killed to prevent the spread, and there are complex lab tests to find the virus)

If it spreads here, it is going to affect the bacon supply and all pork products.

Immediate danger to humans, no. But it is a good reminder about virus epidemics and how they spread. Viruses do mutate from not-infecting-humans to infecting-humans from time to time. The film Contagion (2011) dramatizes the spread from chickens to humans. All the science in the film is accurate.

:D
The thing I would worry about is infected swine meal getting into feed or dog food for farm dogs.

"Smugglers and food exporters trying to bypass quarantine controls have taken pork products infected with the swine fever to markets in Japan, Taiwan, Australia, and South Korea. In October, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said there was no testing method for it to screen imported pork products for the disease. In March, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials captured 50 shipping containers at the Port of New York and New Jersey loaded with 1 million pounds of deliberately mislabeled Chinese pork—a discovery that has American hog farmers worried that China’s swine fever will eventually hit U.S. pigs."

This came across my radar:

I have the opposite opinion, of course!

Really liked that movie.

I do think it was from a pig the chef in Hong Kong was prepping, then went out to shake hands with Gwyneth Paltrow’s character after just wiping them on a rag and not washing.

The science was mostly good but the really short timeline to a vaccine is a bit sketchy. No guarantee you can develop a vaccine.

Smashing good cast tho.
