foolish.. Far better to place it in Michigan on the giant craton that can't have an earth quake...

But, Michigan has population,, congressmen, clout. No chance of doing the right thing and burying the stuff there. It will come to cloutless Nevada, same with burning man. It is in the Black Rock 'cause California won't have it and has the clout to prevent it.
Actually, the location they are talking about is only technically Michigan. The UP is physically connected to Wisconsin, not Michigan. The concerns about placing a nuclear waste site in the UP are that water might flow through the rocks and leech the waste into drinking water, or at least elsewhere where it shouldn't be. (Actually, the Yucca Mountain site reportedly will be full in only a year or two, so the UP site might be developed anyway. Nuclear waste was a big topic on WORT earlier in the year since Bush & Friends are trying to get Wisconsin to build more nuclear power plants.)

So, the BJ was taking place within sight of law enforcement? Then your problem is with the law enforcement, not with Burning Man. The situation is closer to saying that something should be outlawed which is already illegal, than it is to outlawing something against which there are no laws. (Hm, for all we know it WAS a police officer getting the BJ, not a BM attendee! )

Ah, so Santa Maria ribs are the kind without sauce! I recall someone from Texas mentioning how out west they made ribs without sauce and it always shocked us mid-West types! (Of course, I got him to shut up about how spicey Texas food is when he found out that I have eaten jerked chicken made by a genuine Jamaican... and that the Jamacan warned me about food from India....)

Ah crud-- my ISP just logged me off! I have no idea whether I can get this sent out or not. (Oh well, it is probably a sign that I should be doing more with my day off than sleeping and browsing the internet....)

Craton

Post by Maia » Sat May 22, 2004 7:56 pm

I did not know there was a proposal for a repository on the UP.. Geologically, the craton, or Canadian shield is a great chunk of granite (I recollect) extends from Michigan to Hudson Bay ,, so anywhere on it would make geologic sense.. Nevada makes no geologic sense.. Heck, there are over 300 hot springs in Nevada, that gives a clue as to how close the mantle is to the surface.

Every Labor Day weekend In Nevada there is big celebration, brings tens of thousands of people, called by some Burining Ribs, called by others The Rib Cook Off, in Sparks Nevada, Rib cookers come from all over the country and cook thousands of ribs.. They use sauce, so they are really comparing sauces... Most folk think mine are better... but I could not win the contest as most people are aculturated to sauces.

I did not know there was a proposal for a repository on the UP..
Well, Northern Wisconsin, the UP, Michigan-- those areas are all considered potential, from what I recall. The UP has a lot of old mines located in it, mostly iron and some copper. Now that those mines are inactive, they have flooded. It is possible that the same thing would happen to a waste site. In any event, a local waste repository has been in the news, and potential leakage from it has been a concern. BTW, the Northern Wisconsin/UP region is home to the remains of some of the planet's oldest mountains, and are in the cranton (if I am interpreting my road atlas correctly). So, evidentally, sticking the waste in mountains is still considered the solution-- even if the mountains are mostly worn away.

I dunno-- maybe digging down TO the mantle is what they should do! Let the radioactive stuff melt and mix with the other rock...! (Okay, so I AM writing this at about 1:30 in the morning, and half asleep is probably not the best condition for thinking something like this through logically....)

In any event, part of my reason for wanting to attend Burning Man is I want to see what sort of stuff the Alt. Energy Zone people have come up with. True, nuclear power is considered alternative, but I doubt any of them are bringing in "do-it-yourself, portable nuke plants"! OTOH, solar, wind, and other methods of power generation are probably part of the solution to lessening our dependance on oil (and other subisidiaries of Bush and Friends).

Well, I think I should either go to bed or ramble under another topic!

Well seeing as how it is fictional, I have no opinion one way or the other.

Alt energy at bm is interesting, so much power is consumed,, that the generator is KING... sadly. Our bucolic homestead is solar.. For good information on alternative energy get a hold of Chris at solarwindworks.com He knows his stuff..

Most of my adult life I have lived off the grid.. In college it was wood stove and kerosene lamps, now it is more involved.

Ah,,, Techno, to be so young, so innocent, so cynical,,, that is what all that concrete does to you..

Congratulations on moving Burning Man off the playa Maia.

Oh wait...

Oh well, see you on the playa. Guess that city education didn't help in outsmarting BMORG or the BLM.

Now where was that bag of money we were going to throw around? Hmmmm...

Rob, if you read the dates of the permitting, and my statement regarding "disemination" you would see that what ever my plan is, it is not connected to the permitting process.
2 points;
BLM, The Bureau of Large Mistakes, or Bureau of Livestock and Mining has never been a good steward of the environment.

The war in Iraq continues too.

Sorry Maia, but you're using words that are too big for my tiny urban mind. I'm sure your evil plan is just as effective as you think it will be. Kinda sad you had to move into the one state in the nation where money talks the loudest. Good luck.

Joel and Cowboy are both right. Moore sells everything he touches, but he also touches things that need to be touched.

I can't wait for him to touch the state of education in America, and the incredible inbalance of administration vs. education proper. Now, there's a story!!

Okay BRR, Maya, whatever, I've a question: seeing as how you've pretty much copped to making the BJ at Bruno's story up, is there any reason to believe anything you say again, ever?

Oh, and as for all those evil drugs us urban folks bring to your pristine country culr\ture, a quick review of all the wierd nonsense you post just screams "METH HEAD" to me. Just an observation, is all.

Huh Kelly, would you go back through the posts and find where I "copped" to the story being fiction? Would you do that please?

That story is utterly factual.. Meth head? Perhaps less concrete in your life would good for you.. Purify your soul,, dump your paranoid cynicism.

Or his arteries. You're quite a ways from the nearest hospital, ain't ya? Might consider investing in one of those home defibrillators. Or not.

In reference to the blow job, I have to assume that a) at least Maia's elder daughter has reached the sexual experimentation stage, and b) she knows where the effective local lover's lanes that offer privacy and keep from offending the other natives are and keeps it well out of sight of her mom.

Alright, I started flaming back in pretty much direct proportion to the "urban asshole" and "secret plan/you'll get yours". Sue me, I took the bait. But I have to agree that the daughter comment was out of line.

But you don't need a direct threat of violence to make a court case. You truely didn't mean to say that you require the name and address of an anonymous BBS user. You said that at the spur of the moment out of anger, right? That was a harmless unintentional outburst without any intention of physical harm to another, right? You're anything but stupid (I'll deny this during flamebait later though...), so a thing this obvious isn't a smart thing, right?
