Q: If you stay home will you pollute less?
A: No, probably more, but nobody will notice it.
Q: Will burn scars will be visible when mankind is extinct?
A: Are you kidding?
Q: If every man on the playa masturbated every day of the event, would this produce enough semen to fill a small wading pool?
A: Haven't tried it.

Okay, who wants to do the "Spooge in a Pool" theme camp...?Ugly Dougly wrote:Q: If every man on the playa masturbated every day of the event, would this produce enough semen to fill a small wading pool?

It'd be cheap--a wading pool, porn, and some lotion.

We're all living in glass houses
We're all hypocrites
I believe it's more about where you draw the line than anything else - enviromentalist? it's an irritating label at best. You just do what you can do.
I think Big Dave may have missed the mark about the non-consumer nature of the event. Nobody's really stupid enough to think the message is buying and selling is bad, are they?
mo_corleone's points about people's actions having more far-reaching consequences than they realize is well-taken.
When you push the dominoe, you just never know what's going to fall.

the procession of the earths axis of rotation. To my knowledge, the zodiak is not updated relative to this motion and therefor does not take into account the shifting of the skies. So, even if astrology were a valid system at the time of it's invention, it would now be innaccurate due to this phenomenon.i have yet to hear any serious, skeptical response to astrology that doesn't rely on handwaving or strawman arguments
No shit.consumer wrote:I believe the most valid reason for not returning to Black Rock City is the epidemic-like amount of horrible trance 'music' being played out there. I think this atrocity is far, far worse than anything 'bigdave' mentioned in his diatribe.
fucking pandas and their crappy trance.
I admit to being one of those electronic music afficionados, but even I get sick of having to explain to people that it's not a huge "rave" in the desert each year.
Next year I want to see more mariachis, dammit!
Mariachis!
I know of a guy in the organization who is working to get a full-blown mariachi band to Burning Man. Stay tuned -- your wish may come true!Next year I want to see more mariachis, dammit!

That would ROCK.Flux wrote: I know of a guy in the organization who is working to get a full-blown mariachi band to Burning Man. Stay tuned -- your wish may come true!
I saw a full-blown mariachi band at Burning Man my first year, but I know now it was the peyote. My first clue was that all the players were about seven and a half inches tall, and had calaveras instead of faces. Real mariachi band better, yes yes.
i wish there was a way to know, when seeing a statement like this, if this person means trance, or is using the term generically, as is often the case, for all forms of house music.I believe the most valid reason for not returning to Black Rock City is the epidemic-like amount of horrible trance 'music' being played out there. I think this atrocity is far, far worse than anything 'bigdave' mentioned in his diatribe.
was dueling with the pa. Guy said he was sick of all the trance at burning man and wanted to hear something different. He put on the gr8full dead. Innovative. I later put on Kenny Wheeler in the 'lets hear something different' vein, but I gotta tell ya, it did not get the crowd that Deep Dish 'yoshiesque' got.

As much as I loved Sandra Collins, and the music at Reorient and Xara a little musical diversity might be one of the things that takes BM to the next level. I wish we had more choices besides techno and dance...I go to BM to explore things I would never do here in the conservative Midwest and the more choices I can get exposed to, the better. I've never heard a Mariachi band....except on TV. I'd welcome anything and everything out there, just give us something DIFFERENT!
But if it has to be dance, bringing in Sandra Collins was a damn good choice. Anyone who can make me dance with serious playa foot going on is really that damn good. And she is. My feet were hurting, even bleeding, but her set was so good I couldn't stop dancing. Totally unbelievable.

"Okay, who wants to do the "Spooge in a Pool" theme camp...?"
I think evaporation would be a problem for tracking levels... not to mention dust getting into the pool and making it mucky. All around I think this could win "Worst Theme Camp Ever" award. Still... it would be interesting to see it on the Playa.
Blech. Hate to trip into that pool in the middle of the night.

We ask people to put pans, tarps under their vehicles to prevent drips from soaking into the ground. We can't force exeryone to. Likewise it is the hope that the art cars are in good order to minimalize the spills. Of course there are maintenance vehicles plus the time it takes you to reach your camp adds to the chances of spills. The point is we try to minimalize the damage as much as possible. Yes , we are required to put the place back to the same condition it was as a requirement for permit. I have nothing against environmental protection.
You're right about much of your other complaints. The accomodations are lousey , the dust is terrible, getting along with your campmates is a hassel. These are reasons why more potential attendees don't come. I'll guess the desert was chosen because it was the only place big enough to accomodate a growing city of over 30K.
For most of us what we find there is worth the hassel we put up with. Whether it's a right or left conspiracy doesn't matter to me. Whether it's anti- capitalist or not doesn't bother me. I'm not there for political protest or anti-establishment causes. I'm there to find myself.
You're dang right it's not for everybody. It's a good thing you've tried it once. Good luck wherever you find yourself.

Actually, all of it, including the Zodiac nonsense, is a good reason to just go local. My camp ain't gonna like it, but I'm about 90% convinced that I've had enough of the useless dreadlocked hippie fuckwit consumers of others' efforts. The quivery-lipped nonsense about BM being too white, the whining about the flag, the nonsense about generators, the whining about BLM rangers and the rest of the leftist PC bullshit is just a bit much now.Ugly Dougly wrote:All this - except the zodiac excursions - are a perfect argument for taking Burningman local and small rather than central and industrial strength.
At least all the locals I know plan well for themselves, work hard and take care of themselves, too.

I don't really think there is all that much whining. It's just a few people really, and they're just expressing wishes. Yeah, sure... I'd love to see greater ethnic diversity, fuel cells and fewer cops, but hey. It is what it is - PC hippies included. I think the whole idea is that BM is a mixed bag o' nuts. Us included. The only truly negative elements are the predators. I think we should focus on this, and not all the really minor stuff.

So why are you here? You seem awfully judgemental and unhappy about burning man. So why do you post here with all the "dreadlocked hippy fuckwit consumers"?
Go away then. Why are you taking the time to even worry about it? Leave. I'm not just speaking of you Tom( because you really annoy me) but bigdave as well. You are entitled to express your opinion but my personal perception of these kinds of whiney blah blah blah posts is that I would rather not share my experience of ecstatic joy with people who hold your attitudes.
We all have the right to express our opinions and concerns of course so this is mine. I disagree with you Dave and it's your perogative to not return( yah!).
I think that our experience is based mostly on what we choose to see, and I choose to see the oppurtunity for transformation and extreme artistic expression that I havent found anywhere else.
If you don't like something fix it, why not build a theme camp for uptight nerdy Republicans if you arent comfortable.
You don't have to be a mindless fuckwit to have an open mind. I would like to think that even though I have an desire to learn, I'm not a who drooling idiot without logic. It's called having a sense of wonder, and I would think if you don't have that burning man really wouldn't do much for you.
Rather than being unhappy with burning man, I think the new e-playa reeks of boring negativity. I'm out! Go bitch now.
