Your Burning Man Traditions?

Post by flatlander13 » Thu Aug 20, 2009 8:30 am

Since we are all getting down to the final days of preparing for this years burn………do you have any traditions you follow just for Burning Man?

I’ll go first:

1. Purchase a pack of new white socks to be opened and worn for the first time at BM.
2. Buy instant potatoes in a cup that I only eat at BM. I never eat instant potatoes in a cup any other time.
3. Make at least 100 new pieces of jewelry to give away.

So, any Burning Man traditions that you have?

My burn traditions include Day of the Dead for burn night, Barenjager in the bag, McGillicutty's in the flask...I think that's about it. Oh, and plenty of DOOM. And I usually make ceviche and splurge on gluten-free bread products.

That first inhalation of clove cigarette smoke mixed with a tinge of playa dust.

Time alone at the temple.

Birthday reflections (my birthday always falls during burn week-40 this year).

Somehow, on burn night I end up having to refuse ESD Paella.

A walk around the Man (clockwise of course!) as the first thing to do on Arrival.

Bringing something to burn in the Fire.

I like to spend the week before I leave all stressed out with my ulcer bleeding, eating about 15 tums a day/average.

this year is no exception.

I do the same thing...

some others in no particular order...

1) Give up caffeine 2 weeks before departure
2) drink excessively far away from my house and then walk home a few times (starting a month or two before departure)
3) Fresh socks underwear etc all week
4) fresh sheets on the bed at home for return comfort
5) wear pink on burn night (not sure why)
6) shots of rum for breakfast
7) alone time at the temple

Every August 30th, I get up just before dawn, ride my bike to the man, photograph the sunrise, ride around taking light and shadow pictures then go for coffee.

(This year I'll have to hurry back to camp, to help get it up and running by Monday. Ack.)

Go out to 12 o'clock at the fence in the middle of the night and bask in The Sum of All Dance Music.

I seem to enjoy get 1 or two tire blow outs on the way there. If that doesn't work, I like my fridge to stop working so I can spend several hours at an RV repair place. It generally takes me two days to do a one day drive. That's the tradition.

Other than that, I go say hi to The Man as soon as I get the camp basics in place.

And I try to bring at least one virgin every year (this year we've got 5) and I take them to say hi to The Man as soon as they get their camp basics in place.

I know there is a Black Bear in Davis, and in Gridley; and I think one is in Redding.

When I roll onto the playa (from the east or north) I open a beverage and light up and do a little dance!
