I never thought of Simon Garfunkel as a "dumb fuck." Always seemed like a pretty intelligent guy to me.Simon of the Playa wrote:Wrong.

I've moved this to the Open Forum, since it's not about a specific art piece for the 2014 event.

Volunteering at a soup kitchen won't save the world, either. And neither will trolling message boards.

At the risk of feeding a Troll, or even being one.....
I have found that of all the people I know, the ones making art are also the ones most likely to volunteer helping total strangers at a soup kitchen, fund raiser, or other activity.
I don't think my observation is an anomaly.

Is the world in need of saving? Or does someone have a need to be a savior?

Apparently, we are not allowed to have any fun until the world has been saved.

The problem is, everyone has a different idea of what a saved world should be like. So, it can never actually be saved.
Continue having fun......Nothing to see here.

Re: Something to keep in mind
One person at a time.
One day at a time.
Make sure that the person you educate does the same for two others, and instruct them to tell them to educate two more.
Whether it's doing something unexpectedly generous or kind or even lifesaving, or simply living in tolerance of other fellow HUMAN BEINGS. TEACH others to do the same, and get them to TEACH what they have learned to others. With a little luck, hope, and a lot of work on your part, first the ones you love and hold dear will 'get it', then your friends and neighbors, and finally those folks that you don't know. It snowballs like an out-of-control Fibonacci sequence on steroids in its exponential pursuit of a better world.
There will always be those who resist it, those who belittle it, and those who oppose it. Keep trying. I always have. Have hope, not fear.
Be as snarky as you want to me now. And to you snarkmeisters and snarkmistresses, I simply say, "Fuck you. I still love you."

Wrong.
Take a look at http://www.pbs.org/art21/artists/alfredo-jaar
Take a look at Ai Weiwei
Maya Linn
Take a look at Art Spiegelman
Innumerable filmmakers, musicians, playwrights. 12 Years a Slave just won best picture
Take a look at social practice art
Yes BM is a utopian temporary community love festival. So people rarely mount downer, critical or worldchanging art. But a huge number of artists are doing it, and they are changing the world.
So if you are just looking at BM art, suggest you expand your vision.

I thought it was funny.
It is hard to hing about art when you are at base survival mode. But the need for self expression does seem to kick in quickly once you have a full tummy.
