fresh electrolyte drinks

Post by Mia » Sun Jan 12, 2014 6:10 am

As a person who isn't a fan of the taste of commercial electrolyte drinks I was looking around for alternative and found these http://everydayroots.com/homemade-energy-drink. I thought I would share in case anyone else didn't like them. Careful with coconut and sea salt though since they are natural laxatives.

That looks like good stuff, but prep on the playa may be a little impractical as it needs a blender. Then again, you could always snuggle-up to your local margarita guys and maybe add a splash of tequila and share the love. :)

On a serious note, we used to take a bag of ripe, pink grapefruit and put a couple out where people could see it. When guests start staring at them compulsively, you know they need electrolytes. Feed them the fruit (or two) and some water. Repeat. By about the 4th day the bag would be empty. Good for adding a bit of fiber, too.

100% coconut water is THE magic potion!

Add some orange juice if you want to change the taste. 8)

I only drink water, coffee and the occasional glass of wine but now that I am giving up milk and going vegan I have been starting to drink coconut water, the taste can really vary by brand.

Why don't you just bring some green coconuts and poke a hole in them while you're there?

I think that would put my luggage weight allotment over LOL. This being my first burn, flying in and then taking the burner bus I am worrying about shelter, shade, hydration, food and the elements. I'm trying to take only what I need to have fun but stay out of the med tent ;)

FIGJAM don't you get your electrolytes by drinking out of your deep-cycle battery?

I'm a big fan of this and an experimenter.
You don't need a blender for citrus, just squeeze!
"Sea" salt is just a fad, what you want is sodium chloride and potassium chloride, available together in "Low Sodium" salt.

I use Camelback Elixir tablets. Just drop one into 24 oz. (or heck, a liter) of water and let it fizz, you have your daily electrolytes. See

or get it at your local camping gear store.

It says "Designed for use with Camelbak hydration systems" but you don't have to have a Camelback, I just dissolve it in a 1-liter Nalgene bottle and drink up. One each day kept me well electrolyted.

I am buying two cases (24 liters) of coconut water. The food co-op where I work is discounting them this month, plus I get my employee discount on top of that. *Score*

What about those free, fresh and sometimes even warm electrolyte drinks sitting outside peoples' tents?

Just don't grab the 'lemon.' I hear it's a bit potent.

I brought half a dozen whole coconuts last year, worked fairly well. As a bonus, after removing the water, you can bore an even larger hole or use a funnel & turn the coconut as an awesome cocktail container.

Or remove only some of the water & add several shots each of tekillya, vodka, whiskey & rum for a coco-loco. Like a tropical long island. 2 or 3 of these & you should be nice and properly fucked up AND somewhat hydrated, or at least that's what I tell myself.

Coco cocktail containers lasted only for about a day in the heat of the playa. Makes a nice evening snack as the sun sets. Wait longer than that & they will be brownish & yuck.

Yeah, the orange colored one is much more drinkable.

I really like the Vega powder. Good balance of stuff AND it's vegan. If you're into that thing. When it comes to weird powder, I typically am.
