Hello!

My name is Dan and I'm a long time wannabe, first time burner from outside Chicago. I've wanted to go to BM since the 90s when I first read about it in college. Finally the world has aligned and my resources are available and I'm able to make a go of it with some confidence that I'll not be doing something completely stupid and likely dangerous.

I got my ticket during the initial sale but my companion did not. He insists that he'll still be going and is going to get a ticket and a vehicle pass; I hope this is true, but until he actually gets one I suppose I am going to proceed as if he is not. Which sucks because he had a truck that would totally make this much easier.

I've already read the survival guides and first-timer guides and have started the slow accumulation of gear for my trip to the desert, I've joined FB groups and so forth, but I'm still kind of isolated from other Burners that I've found, so I would like to get to know some more and maybe have some face-to-faces or virtual convos about BM and the whole "how the hell do I get from the cornfields to the high desert?" thing that I'm really concerned about right now.

Anyway, I like to write and play guitar. For my BM plans if I can manage, I'd like to get together a smaller PVC geodesic dome for my shelter complete with a hell-of-a-lot of lights.

I'm prone to ramble so I think I should cut off here and thank you for taking the time to read.

If your friend is vigilant and persistent, he can definitely acquire a ticket. Make sure he hops in the STEP as soon as that opens! Either way, don't be afraid to go alone; many people do and love it.

If I may offer one piece of unsolicited advice: consider not looking at Burning Man photo/video galleries. Yes, read and re-read the survival guide; yes, be welcome here and read up all you can in this gold mine of a forum, but try not to build up too many expectations if you can avoid it.

Then when do you wind up doing something "stupid and likely dangerous," like climbing huge art, it'll be even more fun

I've already emailed him and he is...somewhere out gallivanting around whale watching or something in Mexico. I'm just nervous about getting stuff _there_.

I will take your advice. I already watched a few videos a few months ago, but I'll try to avoid it more. You're right. The expectations game is one I don't want to play. Especially since BM seems to be what you make of it.

As for climbing large pieces of art, well maybe I can count those as gym visits. Heh.
