Best month to buy the flight?

Post by bluemiragemi » Thu Mar 06, 2014 5:47 am

Ticket. Check. Tent. Check. Need to get a hotel room and a flight from Michigan to Reno...any suggestions on WHEN to hit the purchase button on the flight? Prices seem between $450-650 depending on where and when. Recommendations for what day to fly in and what day to fly out? Right now, I'm thinking of flying in on Saturday and flying out on Monday the 1st. The roar I've read about exodus makes me nervous about scheduling a Sunday night flight. Burner Express info is coming up soon, but d'y'know when those busses are scheduled to go out and back to the airports? Thank you <3

wait for it
signup for Jackrabbit Speaks
but don't leave it too late
apparently BM time at Reno Airport is similar to Xmas loads
might be cheaper to fly to San Fran and take the Burner Express from there

in the meantime, some reading,
this years details can be different, so don't bother asking, wait for the details to be released

Flight: You can use Kayak or similar aggregators to give you a sense of when to buy. They'll give you a percentage chance the price will go up or down. You can also search +- 3 days to nail down the best price. You're dealing with a busy holiday weekend plus burner traffic, so I wouldn't expect any deep deep discounts to show up.

Timing: Saturday would be good, though since you're taking the express, you could probably also pull Sunday off without too much of a problem. You'll presumably have one shopping trip to wal-mart with the bus, and since you won't be doing the driving or gate wait, you can rest and nap on the bus itself. If you we're driving, I'd say Saturday is a must.

Leaving, again, Monday evening would be nice and cautious. Especially if you are planning to stay for Temple Burn. No way you can fly out Sunday night and make that burn as well.

but that's to meet the demand, so why would they be discounted instead of near full pop?

this might help, but will it apply to the odd demand of BM

I'm not sure if it's true, but a co-worker told me that if you go on a site like Travelocity late at night... like 2 am, the prices are cheaper than they are during the day. He claims to have saved $ that way.

Also, mid week flights are cheaper than weekend flights. Try s couple of dated, then compare the price and add the cost of a hotel if you were to travel on a different day.

There have been comments on the news that if the situation in the Ukraine is more protracted that it could lead to retaliatory suppression of oil out of Russia, which could lead to a spike in fuel prices. If that happens, you can be sure the airlines will pass along their increased fuel costs in the form of higher fares. Of course, that could also be media hype always looking for the negative angle that will create the most stir.

Saturdays and Tuesdays are typically the cheapest days to fly, I've found. Mondays tend to be a pricier travel day. Based on my own experience plus what I've read in travel columns.

Thanks for all of the helpful input/guidance/links! Sounds like waiting until just 3 months before and buying the ticket in the "off hours" is best, also travelling on non-peak days.

I fly down from Canada (north of Montana) and I typically get my flight in April/May. One thing about booking cheap flights is the cost of check-in luggage. Some times a slightly more expensive flight is cheaper since one can check a couple bags for free.

YMMV.
