For astronomy geeks-moon phases, sunrise, and sunset times for Burning man 2014:

The lack of any substantial moonlight from August 25, 2014 (new moon) to September 2, 2014 (1st quarter) bodes well to best show off all the lighting effects, but it's going to be dark out on the fringes of BRC. It should make for some great photographs. I plan on adding a few more lights to my bike décor to see and be seen if I go wandering. What little moon light visible will also be restricted with the moon set times beginning about 6 pm on the 24th and 10:39 pm on the 31st. http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/a ... =-11&day=1

Sunset times begin at 7:44 pm on Sunday 8/24 and generally get earlier by a couple of minutes each night ending at 7:33 on Sunday 8/30 with nautical twilight (point that the horizon no longer visible) times following the same pattern beginning at 8:47 the first Sunday and ending on the second Sunday with 8:35 pm.

For those early risers-or all night partiers, the horizon will again become visible at 5:14 am on Monday 8/25 and will get progressively darker into the week with first light coming at 5:21 on the last Sunday. This all follows the nights coming earlier and staying dark longer with the onset of Fall. Maybe a little less lunacy without any substantial moonlight on the Playa.

Yes, Ha Ha..Blonds will have more fun this year.. They are easier to find in the dark.. So, I am right to build a hammock frame to sleep under the stars?..

Yes, it'll be just like half of all Burning Man years, where we're either heading into or out of a new moon. Don't worry, you'll probably live - and you don't really need to take any greater (or less) night-time precautions than you would in the years when we're heading into or out of a full moon. Yes, preparation for night-time this year is exactly the same as any other year.

You'll still need a light for at night (finding things you drop, going to the bathroom, etc), some kind of light for your person (you may know where you are, but other burners on foot/bike/MV don't), some kind of illumination and headlight for your bike (same deal), and a modicum of common sense. I think all the basics are covered in the Survival Guide, which is considered required reading.
