Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
Happy Friday and whatnot! I've got a bunch of software testing and assorted projects to juggle today. Hopefully I'll also get the chance to check over a couple big high quality renders I ran last night, and if they need more tweaks I'll get a chance to run another one.

Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
Glad you feel better. I beg to differ with you, though, that granites DO contain water. It's in the neighborhood of a quarter percent or less molecular water. This is from elemental analyses that determine everything in the granite, from Silicon (loads) down to the rare earths, or lanthanide elements. Magmatic water and a few other 'volatiles' are what give andesitic volcanoes their explosive power. Sudden release of pressure from hundreds or even thousands of atmospheric pressure to 'normal 1 atmosphere pressure is like putting a pin in a balloon. Boom.ygmir wrote:*wanders in, makes CCC*
Hi gang!
Thanks Rhino, I feel better now. I thought the Carrera marble, or the like, would be ok.
I might discuss, though, granites don't, or can't, contain water. It does soak in . I can leave a cup ring, on most any granite counter (unsealed) with a simple cup with water under it.....it does evaporate back out, but, the water will go in. I've heard of experimental water filters, using granite, as well. Acknowledging, some are far more porous than others.
Heading down to hopefully have lunch with Magic Marty today, then meetings all weekend.
someone else may have to take cartoon duty!! unless there is wifi, and I'm doubting that.
*scurries out back door*
Say hello to magic marty for me, and have a great time.
Keep at it, Trilo, sometimes I wonder how you keep it all together and stay sane.
I'm in the midst of looking over a presentation I'm doing next week before I start finishing another that I'm doing next month. Next Tuesday, I've got a full hour-long presentation to give to a room full of retirees taking a course here through Lincoln University. Researchers have found that life-long learning aids senior citizens in keeping the quality of life high. We're happy to do it, and I'm looking forward to all the neat and interesting questions that the retirees will ask. Since the subject is geology of Missouri and how it relates to highway construction, it won't have any thing to do with politics. I get to talk about landslides, and rockfall (I have a movie embedded of the 2001 Glenwood Canyon rockfall in Colorado that busted holes like swiss cheese in a bridge deck), research, aggregates, bridge foundations, and other neato stuff. I enjoy knowing that I'll do good with stuff I enjoy. This will be fun, and I'm glad my boss asked me to do it.

Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
Good morning all, lts going to be a wonderful weekend here in Northern Nevada, 70 degrees by Sunday.
Rhino, I like going to geology classes like that.
I did take a Goelogy 101 type class here in Nevada, but it was general geology.
The geology class I most enjoyed was one I took at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, on Alaska geology and prospecting.
It was an informal class once a week for 6 weeks with a couple of field trips, but so much fun.
The best thing I learned was how to read a geology map.

Pie are not square. Pie are round. My 7th grade math teacher just loved to say this. Mr. Purdy? I'll have to ask my sister... she had him too.
Hey, they had $5.00 pie day at the grocery today, maybe this is why.
FRIDAY thank thank you, Mr. calendar. Oh, I cleaned the desk last week, and this week, is the electrics table and drawers. Going to finally get all the same things together instead of everywhere I look, which for some reason turns into nowhere I look when I need something. So many little things.
How about a world war one flying ace mug of rootbeer?

Reminds me of one of the lesser known Peanuts movies.
Bon Voyage Charlie Brown. And a quick google shows that someone uploaded the whole thing to YouTube. I recommend it before it's gone.

Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
Wow, that last render was a real doozie - wound up taking 3 computers working together just over 6 hours to finish the single frame. I'm pleased with the results though, it's crossed into 'cinematic quality' (which is new territory for my own original content). I made a few tweaks and adjustments this morning, then got to work on a few things around the loft and then did some running around town... and it was still chugging along when I got back.
Anyhoo... that's all done now, time to relax a bit and start pouring drinks. Fun project weekend ahead, hopefully meet with a couple friends about collaborations and camp planning and other assorted nonsense. Cheers!

BTW, I happen by chance to be licensed as a 'Qualified Geologist' in the State of Alaska. They have a very stringent requirement that has to be fulfilled- you have to be a 'Certified Professional Geologist' with the American Institute of Professional Geologists. But that and $50.00 gets you a lifetime licensure, as long as you keep up the AIPG certification, which I have.
I've used it once, when giving advice to the Alaska DOT on a pipe ramming operation that they did on the highway that goes between Anchorage and Fairbanks. They did a good job in design, so all I had to do was give them the review of the geotechnical parameters. I didn't get paid for that, because in the interest of DOT relations (I work for Missouri DOT) it's the right thing to do. They might have some ideas that they'll share with my DOT down the road. Who knows? They might offer some helpful hints on snow plowing or ice control additives. We've done some weird things before that worked, and still do. A couple of years ago, they started using sugar beet juice as a road pre-treatment for ice in marginal temperatures, and the stuff really works well. It's the stuff left over when factories process sugar beets. Wisconsin DOT is exploring the use of used cheese brine (another waste product) as an ice control additive. Who knows what they'll come up with next?

I would love to attend that lecture. Sounds fascinating. My SIL has a geology degree, but because she finished her degree so late in life, she never worked in that field.

Mornin!
Gonna see the Johnny Cash tribute at the Eldorado this evening. We're leaving early. Stopping for breakfast at the Basque restaurant in Carson City and then go to Cabela's to pick up a .22 rifle I put on lay away last month.
Now if I can just get some ammo.

And the Basque cooking? Oh my goodness...there are TWO Basque restaurants in Winnemucca that I got to try two years ago. GREAT food.
I pass right by Cabela's main shipping store in Nebraska on the way out to BRC, but Bass Pro shops started in Springfield, Missouri. I won't shop at Bass Pro. Not after what they did to Tom Foster here in Columbia. Tom used to own a sporting goods which was a Bass Pro Shop affiliate (had their logo and a lot of the merchandise) and Bass Pro gave him 90 days to shut down before they put in a new store here.
Tom Foster sort of had the last laugh. The sporting goods store used to sell adult beverages on the side. His t-shirts are still famous. On the front, it reads "Only in Columbia, Missouri".
On the back it read, "Tom Foster's Bass Pro Shop - Liquor, Guns, and Ammo" They used to have "liquor, guns and ammo" on the sign out front.

It did a lot to reestablish the mythos of the redneck locally. I can hear it now - - - - -

So, I just called the friend (temporarily in Montana) who had given it, and he doesn't remember either.
