is THIS a not - to - offensive gifting idea?

Post by McStrangle » Fri Mar 14, 2014 9:33 am

My job isn't the most exciting thing in the world, so one of the things I do to keep myself amused is I've been working on a comic book.

It's not related too TTITD in any way, except for being inspired while there to finally get off my arse and set pen to paper.

So my question is, If I were to bring a stack out (say 100 or so), would it be something you as a burner would like to receive? Coming from Australia it seems like a relatively easy way to participate and create something without actually being in the country. I thought maybe I'd put like, email or something in the back so if people felt the need they could let me know what they think

Also, if anyone had advice on cheap ish printing services that would be a great help, as I thought I'd get them sent to a friends in Reno and pick them up before the burn.

On a completely unrelated note, if anyone from Newcastle, NSW happens to be reading this, what up, you. Sorry if this is in the wrong section I thought it was the best fit for the topic.

Welcome.

I'd love an original comic book. Perhaps a special edition which you'd not be selling elsewhere? Comic art prints?

Assuming there is no commercial element to this, I'm thinking you could set up a stand in front of your camp and hawk these books to passersby. And when you are not there, you could have a windproof box for folks to pick up a copy. You would want a big sign explaining -- in just a few words -- what you are offering. There are sure to be some comic fans among the 60.000.

But be aware of the MOOP danger. As the saying goes... naked people have no pockets, and you would need to make darned sure only people who truly wanted to take a copy back to camp would get one. And that not a single sheet blows away.

Oh absolutely no commercial aspect. The only thing I would hope to gain from it would be possible feedback.

Maybe a box for when I'm not there with a little sign saying something like "free comics! If you don't like it, burn it, don't moop it!"

Is kinkos an option for printing? We have something similar here called officeworks, but it's. .....not the cheapest

I've been here awhile...I just never post unless I have something vaguely important to say / ask.

....or I'm drunk. Either / or.

Actually i did do a few portraits on napkins and stuff a couple years back, and I THINK people enjoyed them, however I was maggot drunk so my good intentions may have come off as non - consensual art attacks :p

Not a band name... but what a fine name for an album.

I've shared my art out there... Can you give it to people in a direct way, rather than a box? Make it a personal connection?
(Heck, I'd love to have one... or at least look at one.)
Kinko's seems to be pretty cheap, or maybe there's just not much competition at the level at which I print. It does let you bring in a thumb drive and print from that. I suppose everyone must...

Oh no, I mean obviously I'd be sitting behind the box, I just meant like if I went off a did stuff and left a box there. Or even, heaven forbid, left a bunch in the centre cafe.

Actually if people seemed into it I'd be more then happy to do personalised sketches or whatnot in the books. I'm not the greatest artist in the world, but I'm not the worst, and I do a mean 2 minute portrait :)

Do the comic and leave the last page blank so you could do a quick sketch and include the person in the end of the story!!!

Just one thought - burn barrels work well for wood and people do sometimes burn paper in them but it can get moopy when blackened pieces of thin newsprint paper start blowing around. Just remind people to "keep it or gift or recycle it at home".

Paper is no longer allowed in community burn barrels/ burn platforms, due to the "blowing around" factor, only untreated wood can go in them. Paper would need to be carried home, or you would have to find a camp with their own burn barrel.

As for the OPs project - love it! Especially with the idea of a blank last page where you could do a quick sketch of the recipient. That would pretty much guarantee that it doesn't end up as MOOP!

Ah sorry, yeah....makes sense. Probably just best to have a "please don't Koop me!" Disclaimer. That being said jerks will be jerks!

There are several thousands of copies of Burner newspapers distributed to the masses there...occasionally one sees a copy or 100 blowing across the playa...but there are worse messes.

I'm giving this a nudge over to the Q&A board, since that's a better fit for general preparation questions. The Introductions board is, as the name implies, for basic introductions and hello's.

That would be perfect! I think a lot of people would love a sketch of themselves . . . especially in their Burn clothes, or with some landmark around or behind them.

Close - we've been distributing 30,000+ papers a year for ages, I don't know how many the Beacon does (or the other, smaller ones - like the long lamented Spock Science Monitor *sob*). I pick up our paper if I see them floating around as MOOP, just like I pick up other MOOP out there.

I think this is a great gifting idea, and I think you mentioned the idea of leaving some in Center Camp Café. I think that would be a stellar gift to many Burners. I go to Center Camp most every day in the mid-morning. I like to get a cup of coffee, people watch, relax and I always like something to read. I would imagine that you'd be just fine with a Burner taking your comic book with them, so maybe plan to replenish as the week went on. Even if you gifted them out on the playa, they wouldn't be seen as offensive. Anything hand-made is always a true gift. I will graciously decline plastic trinkets that are purchased in bulk, but a Burner-created comic book I would be happy to receive.
