Observations: is that a softride saddle set up? does the spring do anything? Did the builder have an unlimited welding budget?

The saddle is on the end of a long carbon-fiber-looking lever that acts as a leaf spring, yes. In fact, it is much too soft for me -- I plan to shore it up with a seat stem from the unused seat tube. Somebody told me this "leaf" spring is very expensive.

Yeah, there are a couple superfluous pieces, but so what. The long coil spring is actually pretty clever -- it simply hangs there and bounces, creating a baffling visual.

I'm going to use it at a local steampunk festival (besides BM).

The arm can be tilted up and down, and the saddle can be slid back and forth. But I don't see any way to adjust the spring rate. Of course, it wasn't made for a 200 pound rider!

So much awesome in this thread! Here's a shot of our trikes. We eventually plan to build and art them out a bit more, but I'm not sure whether or not we'll get the chance to push those projects forward this year or not.

I am hoping this is the correct thread to post this question.

Does a playafied bike stay playafied if it is transported on a carrier, exposed and hurdling through space at highway speed for 1500 miles?

Obviously it would depend on how well the lights and such are attached, but would I be better off waiting until I get there to pimp my ride? It would kinda suck to spend the time decorating it just to discover a nekkid bike once I arrive in BRC. I'm not sure if wind turbulance would be an issue, or if the van (Chevy Express) would mostly protect the bike from the wind.

At this point the only decor I plan on using are a few strings of battery operated LED's - nothing elaborate, just enough to be seen at night.

My intuition says the lights would stay on just fine, but I can't find another thread where this has been discussed.. Any suggestions/experiences?

Use plenty of cable ties, or people may have better suggestions, but really, really, really don't finish up a project on the playa--you'll never finish it.

Think of the hundreds of miles at freeway speed as doing the best possible job of making sure that nothing falls off on the playa...

Thanks Fishy. I was thinking cable ties and gaff tape. I just couldn't see myself sitting in my camp decorating my bike...I agree totally - it just wouldn't get done out there. And you are so right about the wind test! Glad you pointed it out...I had to kick myself in the ass for not realizing it before posting the question.

The wind in transport is probably a good test for how well things will stay attached on playa. Setting up can include putting the stuff on the bike, and sometimes it can span a few days before the lights are all up in camp, on your outfit, on your bike. It can be tempered by how much effort you want to put into it, or how much you want to have to take apart when you leave. Avoid the thought of thinking it might be fun to still be building something though. I've brought things that weren't quite finished, and sometimes they are fun to complete, and sometimes, they stay in the car for next year. I have to put my trike together from it's transport configuration. I used to put it inside the car, now I hang most of it on the bike rack. That means the rear axle, wheels, handlebars, seat, pedals, lights and basket, and doodads are put on when I get there. It's just part of setting up.

Wow!! Elorrum! That's a cool trike. I would love to examine it closer. I am a tinkerer, and enjoy the mechanics of setting things up in general. For me, a trial run at home, close to my tools and supplies is a good idea. It makes re-assembly go smoother, with fewer surprises. I agree that an unfinished project would probably remain unfinished.
I already have tricycle envy from reading these threads. I will use the bike I have this year, but hope to upgrade to three wheels for the future. I think I remember reading that you used a kit to transform a bike to a trike - maybe you can educate me when we meet in August.!

Well, this weekend a fellow eplayan took ownership of the Swiss Army Kamikaze Ashtray, so I started looking at ideas for BRC transport.

While browsing CL, I came across this.



It's one of the first electric shopping carts.

Works on one 12 volt battery for 11 continuous hours.

Old technology, so no fancy electronics to break down.

2.5 mph, but it's got a belt drive and with a bigger pully, I can get to 10mph.





After I stretch it and lift it for more ground clearance it should get me around.

Motorized bike kits can be pricey, but this was only $60!!!!

The motor, controller, wiring, and switches are all I was looking for, but it turns out these things are everywhere for under $100!!!

FigJam, I have one of those old carts deep in the storage shed.. It looks awful..
The big fat controller coil is fried.. Wounder if you could exchange top and bottom pulleys? Or just a larger pulley on the motor?

Doubling the size of the motor pully=doubling the speed.

Combine that with a little larger tire and I think I can get it to 10 mph.
