Burning Man and Quantifiable Risk

Post by Zorch » Sun Mar 23, 2014 9:20 am

I have just been learning about a fascinating little thing called a Micromort. Has anyone ever worked out how many of these units a trip to Burning Man is?

As quoted in the 18th edition, "probabilities and possibilities of the Burning Man event, and or desert exposures", the author, one "Snowah Zark" (sp?), posits a calculation approaching 7,210 Micromorts, or as known in those days: "Barometrically Unexpected Logically Lascivious Super Heterogeneous Implicated Theory".
As such and with factors including the down rage location related to nuclear testing, and natural radiation extant, combined with the occurrence of silica and related detrimental elements in the surroundings but also the free distribution, and prolific use therein, of mind and physically altering substances, not to mention dehydration, physical and emotional stresses, Human conditions of sloth and perverse sexuality, and of course, masturbation.

I have no idea whatsoever. And personally speaking, I think that fixating or overanalyzing the risks can greatly diminish the experience. Not just with Burning Man, but with life in general. I'm reminded of an Ignite talk that the former chief of the Emergency Services Division gave back in 2011. Well worth watching.

I can't even imagine where you pulled that statement out of, I doubt it was an encyclopedia. Did you wash your hands and abdomen after?

I'd be more concerned about suffering a significant reduction in quality of life, rather than outright death. Regardless, while you shouldn't necessarily eat your dessert first, you should eat it along with the rest of the meal, lest it spoil by the time you get to it.

Geez. Where do I start?

At work, recently I've had the dubious honor of being selected as our risk management coordinator. My job conditions can amount to one huge risk. People talk about playing in traffic? I do. I work in traffic, all the time. I face all kinds of risk when I go into rock quarries and in underground mines to sample aggregates. With heavy equipment, there's always the danger of overhead powerlines. Below ground (the stuff you don't see can kill you, too) an excavator can face all kinds of lethal risk from electric lines and gas mains. Believe me, you DO NOT want to strike a steel 1400 cfs high-pressure gas main with a drill bit made of carbide. So, like Joseph Pred sez, we MANAGE the risk. It does not mean we don't get the job done. We jump through societal hoops (use of the Federal Manual of Uniform Traffic Control, the fabled MUTCD is one)to cover some stuff. while snappy catchphrases get tagged and thrown around too....'Call before you dig'(for underground utilities)....'look up and live'(overhead powerlines), but it all boils down to AWARENESS.

Pay attention to where you are, what you're doing, and own your own shit (take responsibility for yourself and your own actions). Works every time. If you're not willing or able to do it, stay home. You have no business in a risk-charged environment.
