Re: Work In Progress 2014
The oven arrived today, and here it is all ready to go. The propane tank is stable on the shelf, but I used ball bungees at the top and bottom of the tank to secure it just a bit more, so there's no risk of it shifting or tipping over as someone's moving the cart around.

Ahhh, propane and propane accessories !
Re: Work In Progress 2014
So I needed a new playa ride.
Found an old electric shopping cart like what you see in most grocery stores.
Got it for $60.
Didn't have the basket, but it looked like this.

Stripped down It looked like this.

It only had 2" ground clearance and was 41"s long.
Now it has 5" ground clearance and is 55"s long.

Top speed with a 1" pulley was 2 1/2 mph, but with the 3 1/2" pulley I should get 7 to 8 mph.
The info I could find said that it would run 11 continuous hours on a 35AH battery.
Mine will have a 105 AH battery!!!
Stay tuned!

Is that a miniature 1000 hp motor? Based on my experience with a small Pride electric scooter, it would stall in lawn grass. do some testing before you put too much into it.

There was this plywood.... and this torch... and some poly urethane.....And art happened!!!
It's the deck for the new project.

The steering needed to be raked back, so I cut that T off and it turned out that 1" EMT would sleeve right over the stub.

Re: Work In Progress 2014
got around into deep playa with the small electric scooter with the small wheels..
It was the switches that broke down.. But You will do better with a little larger wheel.. The shopper cart i have is a lot bigger and real clunky..
You have peeked my interest.. I'll pull mine out of storage..Might find time to get it running..

@FIGJAM
Nice!
This gets me in the mood to build something to bring to my first burn. Maybe I will just focus on getting our Bikes set for the playa. We have some time, I will see how the months go.

Re: Work In Progress 2014
I am rescreening my porch (using "the device"). Not much to do with Burning Man other than that I wouldn't be attempting this if I had never gotten into that.
Right now the screens are done on two of the three sides.
This weekend, what I believe was a juvenile cooper's hawk flew in through the unscreened side and hit our glass door. It flew to the screened corner and started behaving like a wasp trying to get out. It would headbutt the screen, flap furiously at it, even perch on the screen. Eventually I chased it out by standing on the other side of the screen.
The hawk flew up in a tree and appeared to be ok. The screen wasn't even scratched by the talons. Good quality stuff I guess, and I suppose we installed it pretty well for amateurs.

Re: Work In Progress 2014
That (project and) wood looks great, FIGJAM! And great job on the dome, Sunbeam! You guys may also want to consider posting it on the playa project work in progress thread. We put that one there to help show off people's awesome projects for the playa (since people focused on playa prep don't often see the Open Discussion threads).
In my own not-quite-playa project, I was able to identify the missing cable I needed for an old camcorder. It got misplaced in either my move last year, or my move to SF years ago. I was able to order a replacement, which should hopefully be here next week. That will allow me to bring a bunch of footage from 2005 and earlier into my computer, which should be fun to play with. Over the course of the last week I'd gotten all the gear and cabling for a different camcorder, and was able to ingest hours of HDV footage from it. That includes a bunch of playa footage from 2006, 2007, and 2011 which hasn't been looked at in years. Now that we've got the storage capacity and systems to do something with the footage, I wanted to bring it into the computer and see what all we've got.

Re: Work In Progress 2014
so, all secured for splitting:

wedge and feathers:

close up, note configuration so pressure takes place "down hole" not at the surface:

5/8" dia. holes:

tap, tap, crack.........:

closer:

as it opens:

cross section:

sometimes, as the piece you split off, falls and flips off the table, your incredible speed, allows you to jump right out of your "safety crocs".:

split piece on the ground, monument ready for next phase of handset/chisel shaping:

mathematically the stone workers on the great pyramid layed a (up to 70 ton) stone every two minutes 24/7.. To complete the job in the kings life time.. This without the aid of safety Croc's..

Base coat done on interior of burner travel trailer. Painting interior flat white so I can paint some folk art in it. Also to lighten it up a bit in there.
