Man, for a Friday things sure seem a little crazy. That can be fun though, I guess.

@aserendipity, if you're in the city at all, take your friend over to see Caruso's Dream at 9th & Mission. Great installation from Brian Goggin, and I think there's even a short range radio station that broadcasts all-Caruso music within a few hundred feet of the building with all the pianos...

@Ygmir - I think the weekend of June 20-22 is the south bay burners' SoulFire, for what that's worth. You could check with Killbuck or NilaSnake to see when the Nada Dada Hotel shindig goes down in Reno. That might be early June, I don't know recall.

I'm cursing under my breath... I'd gotten some gear out of storage the other day, but as I'm going through it, looks like the cables and chargers that go with it were kept in some other bag, stored in some other bin. Damn, that's gonna mean running back over to storage and doing some more digging. I've also been slaving away to learn this new program for mechanical drawing and design stuff - it's big and monstrous and has a learning curve that feels more like a right angle... or a brick wall... man, it's giving me a headache. Maybe digging through storage will turn out to be just the break I need, and I'll come back to it fresh...

Congrats to ChiefDanFox, I saw him post on FB that Alien Siege Machine has received an honorarium art grant. Hooray for big art, and congrats to all those hearing good news about their grant applications.

Thanks, magic marty. If you share my feeling about BRC, then it should be obvious....we're kindred spirits who pass through life creating and leaving good things in our wake.

Amen to hoping Fishy feels better soon.

May the rain be gentle out thattaway.....

We got hammered with quarter-size hail last night. A tornado touched down in far northwest Missouri near Princeton. No reported deaths or damages, but a good wake-up call to tell us to get ready to batten down at any time now. We're in tornado alley, and the season has arrived.

msj2u, too! ;)

Man, the last several nights the forest service has been (semi-controlled) BURNING the remnants of a years old forest fire right next door to my house...the main fire is over 100 feet in diameter, it's awesome! The entire area is snow covered yet toasty warm and lit up with firelight, it's cool...reminds me of the playa, at my home-home :P

NTS Remember to find page 100 of Da Bar 2014 thread for the video threads (Thx Trilobyte, very entertaining and I almost lost a full day or three...lol!)

I'll say hello, all as well, and give you a quick sitrep on what's happening down there, or what I think is happening there. I'm guessing that L.A. denizens are taking it in stride, but I know as a fact that the Caltrans machinery has gone into high gear, just as we in Missouri would. The triumphant secret (not a dirty secret at all, but one few people know is there and is a really great thing) is that Caltrans has a PIBIP. The acronym means "Post-Incident Bridge Inspection Program", That means that every bridge in their system within a set range of the epicenter is being visited right now, with inspectors looking at a specific set of criteria to determine whether the driving lanes are safe. If the cursory inspection is satisfactory, then the inspector tags the bridge as 'OK' and goes to the next bridge. It'll take a day or two to inspect everything, and any bridges which are found to be unsafe will be closed and repaired immediately.

The most interesting thing I saw out of the whole thing was a landslide that got induced by the seismic activity. Also, you can take the 5.1 magnitude as a hard number. According to the USGS information this a.m., a seismologist has reviewed the data, Only a 10% chance of an aftershock above a 2.5.

I went through Post Incident Bridge Inspection training a few years ago. I still have my inspection card (a 'cheat sheet' for reminding the inspector what to look for), and a short stack of forms in my office 'ready' bag. If I'm ever called at work or at home, I know where to report and what to do. Caltrans is similar, because they modeled their inspection program and criteria on ours. Interstate DOT cooperation is not unique. With so much technical data and information on there to get through, it's become a necessity.

Morning Rhino and Sadie. Hope everyone in SoCal is ok and not suffered in the quake. Serious rain here in the SF Bay Area so it will be a good day to start getting some Burner Gear in shape and thinking about the design of this year's schwag.

Hey Fishy, feeling better I hope!

But for now, its into the NEB for a snooze and a cuddle

When you live out here, you develop a sense of bravado about it. For instance, there's a part of me saying, Fffffffft! 5.1? I did Loma Priata!
Besides, the vodka was safe, that's all that really matters.

Edited to add: Good, at least one person had the same reaction...

As to my health, I'm in watch and wait mode. I have a horrible headache, front, in the forehead, centered an inch or so above my eyebrows. Still better than the abominable/abdominal cramping I had for a day and a half.

Morning folks!
Overcast and chilly start to the day, hoping for better.
I have my daughter this weekend and she might be getting the same head cold I have.
Hopefully she didn't get it from me...
Bad cold means I've been off drink for a while - don't miss it much which is a good thing.
Get well Cryptofish and anyone else who is sick.

Looking forward to meeting you all.

HI gang!
yeah good hard rain here, and fairly low snow levels, so yay. We need it all!
Most of us native Californicators, take a 5.1 as "well probably fun, maybe a bottle tipped off a shelf".

cooked dinner last night for my daughter and some of her friends, so I'll set it out for breakfast, too:

Risk? There are big tornadoes and floods occurring more frequently in the rest of the country than earthquakes in California.

I grew up in the LA area. As a lad of 11 in 1971, I vividly remember the 6.6 Sylmar earthquake, the 1987 6.1 Whittier Narrows earthquake. And many aftershocks from both and minor incidents in between.
To me, it seems like since 1971 they've been saying that. Along with California is gonna fall into the ocean, at least everything west of the San Andreas.
A few weeks ago LA was swayed by a cry baby 4.4, I belive. The media thought it was Christ second coming. Social media and the rate news can spread has made people more afraid of natural disasters.
