And while we're on the subject of mounting, who is this "eplaya rescue" person and do you have any pix of her?

And if you both get hit, us Colorado folks will have to mount a rescue from the east...
Hey Joeln: well yeah, and yay. But, I'd imagine any quake, that seriously affected CA and UT, would be the whole great basin sinking or something similar, and probably shake the hell out of the Rockies, as well.
But, the general idea of friends rescuing friends, to me, is where it's at.
Ygmir, count me in as well. If you folks get hit, I have a number of friends that I can coordinate with out there, or I can make one of my famous "high-speed emergency runs' to rescue somebody. A case in point: After the CORE burn in 2012, the Midwest Burners' CORE team that included two of my fellow Interrangers had a blowout on I-80 near Coalville, Utah. Their truck and trailer overturned. There were two injuries. I was in Reno, NV, having just rescued Rocky and gypsy from a near-disastrous Jeep transmission failure on-playa. We stayed at the Silver Legacy Casino and Hotel for our first night back in civilization, and made sure the all-you-can-eat buffet paid a heavy toll for our attendance. gypsy's Jeep was repaired, and I got on the Internet that evening, and my e-mail contained a desperate 'all-hands' call for help. Within 10 minutes, I was on the phone with Lady Cyn down in Dothan, Alabama to coordinate with what was going on.

They needed a trailer hitch and a sane individual to get them home. My buddy Mad Hatter (another famous Interranger who is a super achiever when it comes to helping his friends out) was in Grand Island, Nebraska. I was in Reno, Nevada, and headed straight towards the wreck that had occurred. I took the lead, and told Hatter to back me up when I got to Nebraska if it was needed. Hours later, it's rumored that the National Reconissance Office of the NSA spotted a trail of flame going down I-80 at speeds well over the speed limit behind a white Toyota Tundra with Missouri plates (I can neither confirm nor deny their sighting), through Utah to Wyoming, where the CORE team was stranded.

We spent the next day getting the trailer hitch and all their gear in order to go, and then drove over the next day and a half to Kansas City.

Christine had a broken vertebra. We put her on a pillow for the entire ride back, with no ill effect.

Perstephanie had a concussion. She's OK now. She still refers to me as her 'guardian angel'. I'm honored by that.

Woody was OK, and kept our drivers on point and alert the whole way back.

I'm glad to have been able to help them out.

If you guys need me in a disaster, let me know. The memories I have of that journey are priceless. One only has regrets in life when one does not take hold of an opportunity that occurs in times of need, to help someone (excuse my poor paraphrasure of Charles Dickens, he said it much better in his short story, "A Chrisatmas Carol".

I've got a couple of cases of MREs and a couple of flats of water to take along if needed.

Liquefaction can be NASTY, if you're in some types of clay soil. It will jiggle like a bowl full of jelly, and soil loses all of its strength. This also happens in areas built on fill. One of the worst examples I can think of is Mexico City, where fill was piled on a lake bed. When they had a major earthquake, the whole valley that the city was in had a seismic wave travel back and forth in a phenomenon known as a seiche (pronounced 'seech') that affected the lake that the city was built in. Lake Tahoe is susceptible to seiches. In fact, the Feb. 27, 2010 earthquake that hit Chile affected Lake Ponchartrain, Louisiana with a seiche that approached 0.5 feet. Seismic waves travel great distances, but their strength drops with the square root of the distance involved. You go 2 miles away, you get 1/4 of the wave strength.

This is what I feel happened to the island of Atlantes.. In the greek writings it turned into a mud pie over night.. Then was washed away by the sea..
I read an interesting hypothesis on Atlantis, while in Finland:
it was that, over time, the translation has become "inverted":
"Atlantis" was at the tip of the Baltic sea, the far north. and was a fair weather "island" in the ice sheet, caused by upwelling water from the gulf stream, which had been diverted slightly south due to the same ice, and actually flowed up the Baltic, and up-welled at the end, creating a defrosted "island" in the ice sheet. It would have been roughly round, just owing to the dynamics of the warming air and melting ice. And a temperate climate was formed in the "bubble".
It "sunk" or disappeared, due to the retreat of the ice sheet thus allowing the residents to again wander the world.
IIRC, it was called the "Bock Saga" or some such.

Whelp, I'm a bit far away to participate in any rescue operations, but when the west is devoured in a maelstrom of drought, wild fires and earthquakes, you're all welcome to stay with me out in New Jersey. The most we have to deal with is an occasional douchebag invasion from Staten Island.

Rhino, thanks for the map link. I live in a .75 zone. Yippee. My house sits up above the valley floor, on the lower bench, so ancient beachfront property of Lake Bonneville. There are low areas on three sides of the property, old creek beds which are usually dry. I should be alright when it comes to the actual ground I am on, although my house is not made for shaking. But yes, I can see where the mountains rose, leaving cliffs to where the lakebed lowered. I do know this is called a normal fault... and there's much more I probably learned once and forgot.

Good afternoon campers!

Just had lunch with Yggy in Auburn. Thank you my friend for picking up the tab. You'll be pleased to know that we have solved the world's problems so for that, well, you're welcome.

Yeah, I'm on a fault, too. Thus far, it's to my benefit, I go up a fault scarp hill twice a week for strength. I have pretty nice biceps and triceps for a middle-aged woman.

Happy hump day indeed! And yeah, look at that - all sunshiney outside. Yesterday was gray and rainy around here, but didn't really feel miserable. Pandorra and I headed on over to HQ last night for the premiere screening of "I Took My Parents To Burning Man" (some of you may remember that project from 2012). We'd gotten the time mixed up a bit so had a little time to kill - not normally a hassle, unless it's raining.... but we found one of our favorite taco trucks had set up shop on the next block, and then explored the neighborhood a bit to kill some time.

I liked it a lot. Spry Bry (co-director and main character) is zany and fun, and his parents are awesome. Bry and his mom, along with his other co-director and an exec producer were on hand for a Q&A afterwards. They say that the next stop will be the Sonoma film festival this weekend, and then other film festivals to follow. Then it'll eventually be made available online.

Today's stacking up to be a busy one, plus I've got to get a bunch of laundry done as well as a few things around the house. Then it's head-first into the Global Leadership Conference (formerly known as the regional summit). 300 or so regional contacts/delegates from around the world coming in, it's an opportunity to share best practices with each other as well as pick up stuff from the different sessions and panels. It should be a lot of fun.
