I let my brother have grandkids, and they're safely kept in two other states. I visit about every year, spoil them, and leave. Fits my life perfectly.

I actually broke that spell a few years ago. It's amazing what having an unpredictable income does to your spending habits. It's no longer about "Can I afford this" it's more "Can I afford this and know that I'll continue to live comfortably if all of my clients leave town for a year?" which pretty much always comes up as a resounding "Nope!". It's not that I'm living paycheck to paycheck, but some paychecks are three times the size of others and I'll end a given month in the red as often as not. It really changes what you consider necessary or even worth buying.

TPBM has never had a fixed-income job (mostly consistent hours or straight salary).
