Safes at Burning Man

This seems as good a place as any to ask this.

If I understand correctly, at the gate they're just looking for people trying to sneak in. If I brought a small (one foot by one foot) safe into Burning Man, would the gate checkers (greeters?) ask to see what's inside?

Gate searched my SiteSafe (fully locked) this past year; but it is large enough to fit a person.

I doubt they would search a small safe... But they are GP&E and can pretty much do what they want or direct you to those who could.

(Should you have something to hide, of course. Otherwise, who cares?)

They absolutely will search it if your vehicle is searched. Firearms and other things are banned, after all.

Yes they may. While you could choose not to open it, they could choose not to allow you into the event.

and particularly if you call them gate checkers (greeters)..............be aware all things can be searched.

eta: they can ask to search. you have the right to deny said request. They have the right to deny you entry. you decide.

I've never been in a vehicle 'heavily' searched on the way in. Once we had a Gate girl climb through, but she was only looking for stowaways. Seems like if you had something big enough to hide a person inside it may arouse suspicions. But I've never seen, nor heard of anyone getting their vehicle searched by Gate to the point of demanding to see inside lock boxes and safes. Usually it's Law Enforcement (Revenue Collection) who are tearing cars apart searching for contraband...

Make sure all your vehicle lights are in working order and your license plate is not obscured if you really don't want anyone to try and peek into your munchkin smuggling box.

The other option is to make sure that any munchkins in your vehicle have tickets so you don't have to worry about sneaking them in.

I wouldn't feel comfortable attending this even if all you had to do to bring in weapons, drugs and other illegal contraband was to put it in a safe. I'm glad to hear from almost everyone above that they can and will search small safes.

Curious what would you need to bring in that you don't want the front gate people to see.... feather boa?

Curious if there are any stats showing how many stowaways are found at Gate. I've heard stories of captures out on the trash fence.

there are.

and yeah, sometimes small areas are checked, precisely for the weapon/not allowed items.
I opened a cabinet, full of glitter and sequins and colored feathers one year.......they were going to offer an open air craft table........

Seconding this statement.

It happens. Just remember you could have an active drugged up orgy going on in the back of your vehicle, and not a single gate person will give a fuck. But the moment they see something on the prohibited list, then they do.
