It barely hurts. Way less painful than a tattoo if that gives you something to compare to.

I like mine so much I have been looking into having a branding iron made.

I don't have any tattoos, I guess that sound of skin sizzling like a porterhouse on the grill put me off. How long is the iron actually in contact with the skin?

The iron is only on for a split second. The pain I felt was as it healed. A stinging sensation that was constant for a bit.

I'd be so nervous to have something healing on the playa. Skin has a rough enough time out there as it is without cooking it.

Well if the desire is to create a dramatic scar, then you don't want it to heal smoothly.

I was a tad bit nervous on the healing but mine turned out really really good. Everybody keloids differently so YMMV

My partner is worried about it being able to properly heal on the playa with all the dust.

From what I understand the alkaline dust inhibits infections - I asked an RN before going for it.

You still want to keep it as clean as possible. That which kills the microscopic life, can also irritate your own living tissue.

I am not a medical professional and you shouldn't listen to me on these things.

Yeah, but look at the number of people who've read this thread. Anyone could be out there... I would hate for someone to come to serious injury due to a careless word of mine.

Also - that same alkaline playa dust that kills the bugs is the dust that causes playa-foot and turns little cuts into nightmare painful gashes. I would suggest keeping a brand well covered, just like I would any injury that breaks the skin out there. There's a reason people recommend that any tattoos are gotten long before the playa so they have time to heal.
