Anyone good with Raspberry Pi?

Post by whererusteve » Thu Apr 17, 2014 12:30 am

I've got an installation this year that I'd like to program some lighting to, just wondering if anyone can point me to some good resources for using raspberry pi. thanks!

Raspberry Pis are great, no doubt, but you've gotta get in the mode of programming for a micro Linux system, not so much a simple microcontroller like an Arduino or PIC. First figure out if you really need the power of a Raspberry Pi. Do you need its TCP/IP networking? The ability to login to it like a computer? The interface to a video screen? Its large amount of RAM? The fast processor? Or will something more microcontroller-ish be more suitable, like a Teensy 3.x? Or even a simple Arduino platform type system? If you want the power of a Raspberry Pi, but with more IOs, maybe you'd rather be using a BeagleBone?

Define "good"

Our art used a raspberry pi and I wired some stuff up to the GPIO. What are you trying to do ? Like BBadger says, if you are doing basic lighting and don't plan on tweaking it much wh ile out there then an Arduino may be better.
