1st timers from Australia and America

Post by LilTeeCup2 » Tue Apr 15, 2014 1:28 am

Hello! My Australian partner and I will be attending Burning Man for the first time this year! I am so excited and have heard amazing things about burning man for years. I always wanted to go, but never found the right person to go with. Traveled to Australia last year and met my amazing Aussie boyfriend, Malcolm, who was really excited to go to Burning Man too!!

We are still debating on whether or not to join a theme camp for our first time. I have been doing a lot of reading and I think it would be more beneficial to be part of a theme camp for our first time around. Any recommendations? Both my partner and I are both pretty artsy. I love to dance and my partner is into fire dancing and juggling. I thought maybe we could join a camp that had something to do with our passions so that we could contribute in some way.

Also, since we are currently living in NZ, we won't be back to the states until about a week before Burning Man. Will a week be enough to prepare everything we need? Is that a realistic amount of time to gather supplies? I'm not sure if it is smarter to camp out in a tent or try and rent a van of some sort...Any recommendations on that?

I will continue to read up and search for theme camps. So excited to be a part of Burning Man this year!!! See you all there! :D

Read the sticky "How to join a theme camp" under "2014 Theme Camps." There are hundreds of theme camps...narrow the list down to your top three, get on their radar and convince them you have the desirable skills to meet their needs. Mismatched theme camp horror stories abound. Don't be one of those stories. My first year we camped independently, got to know several theme camps and how they operated before making a sight unseen commitment.
Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

Welcome! I recommend camping on your own your first time. I really enjoyed it.

A week in SF, LA, PDX is plenty of time even for finding a few costumes.

Make a packing list, and match that to shopping places in the US city and capacity of your transport to get it to and from the event.

Reach out to Oz and New Zealand regionals, you may find a camp through them. There are "finding a camp" threads and sections on ePlaya.

Consider traveling around the region camping after the event, showers and a laundromat, there are so many beautiful places in the West.

I think quite a few camps will have fire performance and dancing as interests, but they will really need camp skills.

Welcome you will have a great experience!

Hello! I'm an Aussie girl with an American boyfriend, we met at Burning Man last year and are heading back again this year. It's nice to see some people with a bit of a similar tale :)
