Newbie - Seeking friends, hugs.

Post by FjordFollower » Wed Feb 26, 2014 11:08 pm

Greetings all,

This year will be my first, and I'm very excited to participate. I'm the first, and only, person I know that's ever been willing to go. As such, I'll be coming alone. : ( I'm hoping the friendly and accepting atmosphere is all it's cracked up to be. I'd very much like to make a few friends and pal around with some charismatic characters. Hit me up if you need an additional person for a theme camp, would like to meet, or have a swell gift idea for me to prepare.

I'm from Minnesota, and fair skinned and redhead - so basically the last person on the planet you'd expect to see in Black Rock City. So here's for diversity!

Cheers,

Derrick

Welcome to eplaya, Derrick!

For your reading pleasure, two "don'ts:"

Don't worry about not knowing anybody on the playa! I showed up knowing nobody (apart from the e-pals I'd met on this forum) and made plenty of close friends. You can become part of a camp you found on the interwebs, like I did, or you can go alone as a solo badass and make great friends with your neighbors. If for some reason you feel like you're not getting the interaction you want, come by Lamplighters in Center Camp any afternoon and we'll put you to work with twenty new friends after serving you a drink or five.

Don't stress about gifts! There's an emphasis on self-reliance, so make sure to take care of yourself and all your needs first. Read the first timers' guide and the survival handbook. Then if you find you've got extra energy and enthusiasm, you can make your actions your gift. If you do music, sing. If you like to give hugs, give hugs. If you've got a particularly good joke, or joke so bad it's good, use it at every opportunity. Help somebody pitch their tent or offer a straggler some cold water.
When he lights his streetlamp, it is as if he brought one more star to life, or one flower.
When he puts out his lamp, he sends the flower, or the star, to sleep.
That is a beautiful occupation.

Greetings and hugs from Canada =) I might also be making the trek alone this year for the first time in 5 burns, but I can tell you there are ALWAYS friends to be made on the playa. And a tip from the fair-skinned north from experience lol.... Nevada is a lot closer to the sun. Start your sunscreen bath early or you'll be extra crispy before you even reach the playa =p. See ya there =)

Seriously? We have our gingers, and we have our Minnesotants, so I'm not so shocked by a combination thereof.

Sadly, I cannot expect someone even rarer to show up, because once I've thought of someone, I start expecting them in a corner of my mind. So, I'm just not going to think of an elephant instead.

I am from Minnesota as well. In the twin cities.
My wife ( Tuullii )and I will be heading down to burning man. This will be our first burn as well.
We have our tickets and will be driving down there. The moderately unlikely plan was to have our bus bought by then and retrofitted to at least make it down to the burn. This all kind of resides on us selling our house! :)
So we will likely be taking our Subaru down there, but we will see!

So far we have a Costco car port and an awesome 4 season tent from REI that sleeps 4. We are gathering stuff every week that we think we will need. We are reading a lot on this forum.

We joined the Minnesota Burners facebook page but have not tried to reach out yet.
I don't know if we will join a theme camp or not. Might just see how it goes and form a great bond with our neighbors.

Would definitely be cool to know some Minnesotans at the burn!

If you can't find campmates beforehand, your best chance to make real friends is to come totally prepared to take care of your own needs for a week in the desert.

Show up and find an open space large enough for your little camp. Then walk around and meet your neighbors!

Thats how it has worked for years and years....

Hello from the Great White North of Canada. April 22nd and we still have a couple feet of snow and are having to keep the wood stove burning 24 hrs a day.
I am also a newbie (62 yrs old, a red head and recently widowed).
I am coming down with my son and a group of his friends. He's concerned I might be "put off" by any shenanigans that might go on in his motor home even though I assured him there's not much I haven't seen or heard, so I am in the process of acquiring a very small travel trailer to pull behind his motor home so I, at least, can have a little privacy and will be looking for some older new friends to "hang" with.
I don't believe in sunscreen but make sure I cover up with cool flowing garments, a nice wide brim hat and good wraparound sunglasses. I will, however, look for a good sunblock lip gloss and skin moisturizer.
I play guitar and sing. Although my voice isn't what it used to be, I still like to croak out a tune or two (or three or......) depending on how many drinks I have in me LOL. I also have a folder of songs marked "DO NOT OPEN IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED... XXX" which inevitable gets opened regardless :)
I am excited to put together and try the SWAMP COOLER I read about in one of the forums.
Looking forward to my first (but hopefully not last) BM experience

Ha I'm from Bloomington, Minnesota, and I'm a day-walker ginger. Redish hair, fair skin. My first burn as well. I was planning on going solo, still am really, but I posted on Facebook I was going and some old high school acquaintances said they're going too. So we plan on discussing the possibility of collaboration to get to the playa. Otherwise, I'm planning for my own trip.

Where ya from, Derrick?

Well. I'm from Shoreview, Minnesota. I'm passively looking for people who might be interested in forming a camp party and/or way down to the event.

Martian Sky (?) would be the obvious choice. I know there's regular meet-up in Minneapolis. Check the regionals list.
