Put a DJ in a dark soundproof box. The output of the decks will be digitized and sent to a lab where a photon can be emitted into a Mach-Zehnder interferometer scheme as described in http://arxiv.org/pdf/1004.1895v1.pdf. These bits of information can be measured in an interaction-free way, and then sent to a soundsystem back on the playa. There may be some degradation of sound quality due to probabilistic imprecision of the interaction-free measurement.
People can then go to the theme camp and dance without interacting.

Re: Teachers -Left out in the cold
It's not a question of comparison. How Burning Man compares to education isn't really what we're attempting to look at here. Integration is the issue. What principles and practices can we take from Burning Man and integrate them into a holistic approach to education. Why, and how?BBadger wrote:
I think you're comparing apples and oranges here.
I couldn't disagree more. The 'concept' of spectator vs. participant forms the foundation of the Principles of the event (especially the ninth) written by the founder of the event. Now, there is the argument that we each get to define our own burn, but now I'm talking specifically about what the guy who created the event and developed the identity of TTID has said:BBadger wrote:
This again? That concept is only "fundamental" to the culture of Burning Man only as a means of labeling certain people "participants" and others only "spectators." It's a burnier-than-thou concept. Otherwise, the distinction is completely faulty.
That, I would say is a concept fundamental to the event. Of course, it can be used to label others in a "burnier-than-thou" fashion, but I don't think that's what Larry had in mind when he wrote that. Our community is committed to a radically participatory ethic. We believe that trans-formative change, whether in the individual or in society, can occur only through the medium of deeply personal participation. We achieve being through doing. Everyone is invited to work. Everyone is invited to play. We make the world real through actions that open the heart.
Another thing I think is important when dealing with fundamental values is to keep in mind the paradox. Fundamental sets of values, theories and dogma usually have paradox all over the place. Understanding, or at least rcognizing the paradoxes inherent in the ideas that drive our behavior and compose belief systems can reveal a great deal of insight into many areas, education being one.
Therapeutic? I can only speak for myself but I find that sometimes engaging in conversations that require writing long and tedious responses, and then the reading of long and tedious responses that challenge my point of view are, well challenging and mentally stimulating.Captain Goddammit wrote:I hope writing posts that long and tedious are very therapeutic for the authors.
Some people watch documentaries and some people watch football. There's plenty of other threads around that are full of short, concise and easily comprehend-able conversations. Maybe educational philosophy just isn't for you, but I do appreciate your extensive knowledge when it comes to cars.

Are you saying that all the information in a DJ performance can be encoded in a single photon, then recovered?5280MeV wrote:

Once again I am astounded at the abundance of snide that is so generously endowed upon the citizen of eplaya. I wish we could use it as an alternative energy source – a lot of the world's problems might be solved instantly!
This thread is about education. Nobody forces you to read or comment. If you don't give a damn about education, you are completely entitled to that. If you don't understand it, nobody will think any worse of you. If it's too long for you, you can just walk away.
Teachers, however, or anyone who is interested in education, might actually get something out of this. There are amazingly many similarities between why people have a good time on the playa and why kids have a good time in an open education classroom. It's a topic that might really be worth exploring.
(Of course I cannot wait for the flaming following this post, bring it on!)

Yeah yeah I know I left a god damn typo in my post, I was editing it and got distracted by something else... but you know what I meant.
And "eleventy zillion" is just a halfway humorous intentional exaggeration, of course it's not a real number.
The post by the hairy-pitted U.S. bashing superior-race German that was so annoyingly long was an excessive amount of boring blather polluting the thread.
Those drawn out point by point retorts are nothing but petty semantic shit.
Even if you use correct spelling and punctuation and proper grammar, you're not an effective communicator if you can't get your point across without boring everyone to sleep!
That doesn't make me against education. That makes me against people getting this ridiculous about the meaning and impact of some stupid kindergarten "teachers" being part of BRC.
As far as I'm concerned, kids shouldn't be at Burning Man. But that argument has been had, and I lose because Larry is on the other side, and it's his party. That's the deal.

hairy-pitted.
My experiences in BRC over the last 15 years have undoubtedly colored my teaching, my students' cultural/societal/creative beings, and their parents' (and administration's) boundaries.
All for the better.
I'm thoroughly enjoying this discussion.
I propose that we consider differentiating between spectator and audience.
As both a performer and an educator (in my world) these are not the same at all.

As long as we are planning to rewire some physics experiments, I propose we swap Schrödinger's cat with a DJ.
The notion here is this experiment could then be run on the playa without any fear of running out of test subjects, or of possible harrassment by animal rights groups.

But if we never open the box, that DJ will never stop spinning. And that would be unacceptable.
Whatdafuck, though, if anyone remembers the original question, who decided that moving the autumn start date for schools up to August was a good idea? Plane-loads of foreign workers fly in here every year to take the summer jobs local students can't get because they can't work through Labor Day. And half the schools around here have to cancel classes that first week anyway because their AC can't handle the heat that time of year, not in those prison-like boxes they build for schools.
This has never made any sense to me. I could not drink that brand of kool-aid for any amount of money.

Face it. American schools are horrible prisons where they drain the life out of small children and make them into drones.
Cause 'Merka!
And when they grow up, they can go to real prisons, and have hope and humanity drained out as well.
