Time for an Adult only section of Eplaya

I want it and I know that many other are looking forward to having an adult only section and I know that the FBI wouldn't like!

So lets do it!

End the bullshit of having the law enforcement making trouble for Burning Man! Law enforcement are just looking to fuck things up for us whether or not they are really looking for Pedophiles but looking anything they can and I mean anything!

kay, yer post subject says ..."adult only section of Eplaya", but the poll asks if ..."Burning Man should have an adults only section". which is it? cuz you know my thoughts on the latter, but the former was kinda funny...if that's what you meant. but i can't tell...

I meant an Adult Only Section of Eplaya.

I would totally support an adult section of Burning Man if we couldn't prohibit underage participants from attending as well.

By the way did you proof ID's at your bar?

Sustained dialogue, brutal honesty, and pretty remarkable observations from all corners. Agree or disagree but most folks over there back their words up with ideas/cites/examples/solutions/etc.

A lot like it used to be here actually. At least until a few *asstards and their sock puppets sludged in here and ratcheted the discourse down to sub-Neanderthal mode.

One of the interesting things I got out of it was they toned down the place because it had turned into something different than THEY wanted it to be in 1998.

in mid-1999 i got emails and phone calls from Harley and Marian asking that we tone down the vibe. fortunately, bianca had already had lots of conversations to this effect and so we were all in agreement. we talked about multiple ways to lessen the built-up expectations etc...

Well..it's a wee bit more complicated to make that happen that you might think. We currently have a declare-you-are-over-13 policy - that is in compliance with the COPPA act, which among other things determined that children under 13 can not give out email addresses or other contact info.

The functionality of same would have to be reviewed, to see if:

a) it could be altered to declare if you are under 13, 13-17, or over 18
This way any adult could see the adult section upon login.

b) we could set up another declaration page, leading to a private area, so that only those interested it the adults section would access it.

Of course, we are still on the fence about whether to create it or not. It brings up several issues:

1 - do we want to the Eplaya to be a magnet for what will most likely be very sexually explicit postings? IS that actually community building, or should those conversations happen somewhere else, off of this bbs?

2 - without vigilant moderation, it will quickly devolve into a porn talk area. There are other places for foks to go for that, and we are not porn providers. Nuh-uh.

3 - even with moderation, there would be issues that will predictably arise...eventually someone will feel stalked or threatened, some fantasy or kidding will go too far into territory that others will not like, etc. etc. There will be complaints, complex issues of boundary and consent. There will need to be a whole additional set of guidelines created for that area, and there would absolutely have to be someone to admin and respond to those issues.

(I can tell you right here that there is no way in hell that that would be me, and honestly, if I won't, I don't know who would.)

I guess what it comes down to is I foresee all kinds of risk and work, with little benefit to the community as a whole.

I understand your desire for over 18 expression, A||Z, and do not think that your participation in such an area would lead to these things. But to open that up to you is to open it up to everyone. We have to think in terms of worst-case scenarios, and I foresee a pretty bad one.

It's not that I think this kind of topic area shouldn't for exist for Burners somewhere, but what I have not yet heard is a compelling reason to provide it here and assume that extra risk and work.

FYI - I am by no means the final judgement - we have a group of 4 admins to review this suggestion and we'll decide by consensus.

There are no easy answers to designing it or moderating it, but it will help keep out those that are trolling about for pedophiles or just an excuse to Sneak and Peek into one's computer or life.

While it's a nice idea I feel it's DOA. The eplaya team has mentioned elsewhere that they have other projects to work on such as moving over to Plone, etc. Also there is not an unlimited budget, it's all run by volunteers (Emily, TP, we thank you for your efforts and we love you both), and that being said...it's just too much to ask for.

I've seen some touchy subjects handled on here without the need for a special adults only section. Since this special section idea is going nowhere, maybe it's time to try another approach such as handling adult themed discussions in a discreet but creative manner. Or in other words let's find a creative way to work with what we have.

AIIZ, I hope you don't take this as a personal attack on your idea. It's not. I've wrote before that I like it. But after reading TP's post the odds of getting this special section appear to be fading fast.
