The traveling ladies just telephoned. They are southbound on US 101 at Garberville. So it will be a slightly late lunch. Very much worth the wait, I expect. :D

I finally finally finally got the chance to go through some pics from last weekend (though I haven't touched any video bits yet). Here are some juicy nuggets from Friday night, Pandorra and I headed on over to Treasure Island for a dinner/drinksy thing at the workspace Peter Hudson and Marco Cochrane use to build their amazing creations. On the way, we couldn't help but make a pit stop to see Marco's Bliss Dance, the epic playa installation from 2010 (now on either long-term or permanent display on the Treasure Island waterfront).

Image

From there it was off to the warehouse for Hudzo's Spin, to help raise a few sheckles for his biggest and most badass kinetic zoetrope yet. We didn't actually see the new piece, just various parts and tools scattered throughout the space (not only is it still under construction but Peter likes to have the piece be a surprise on the playa, I can respect that). He did have Even Deeper (the divers from 2004, my first year) and Charon (the ferryman from 2011) set up and running under electric power. That was odd, I was expecting to have to do some pedaling or pull on some ropes - having them run so silently was both eery and magical all at once.

Also available and accessible were some areas of Marco Cochrane's studio, which showcased some of his past work, works in progress, and the early days progress of R-Evolution, the next installment in his Bliss Project series (which he's working on for the 2015 event).

It was an amazing night. Our eyes were popping out of their heads for all the wonderful bits of art on display, from Katy's Heartfulness piece to Cubatron hanging from the ceiling to the awesome Heart Phoenix bus complete with wings all set up to dozens of other small pieces from the playa or other events. We also got to meet and chat with some great people on the team, and spent some time talking to Peter about his stuff, our stuff, playa experiences good and bad, and the challenges he's got with pieces traveling around the world. Capt'n Kirk from Space Cowboys was also playing some great music, though we didn't end up staying too late since we still had two days at Maker Faire ahead of us.

Here's to great art and getting really fucking excited for the playa - drinks all round!

Good morning, all.

Things are looking up more than a little here.

Stopped and bought the new Craig Johnson book "Any Other Name" this weekend. Absaroka County Sheriff Walt 'Long Arm of the Law' Longmire is featured in this novel, and it didn't take long (2 1/2 hours) for me to finish it. Perfect timing, because on June 3 Season 3 of the A&E series "Longmire" begins. I'm addicted to the novels and the series because he's a guy who simply does the right thing. Doing the right thing has been my goal ever since 2008 when I attended and participated in Burningman the first time. It's a daily pursuit I can live with. It also makes me look in the mirror with a fair amount of satisfaction each and every morning as the day begins, because I have a goal for the day.

It's funny, but a statement made by a Congressman has been my guiding phrase ever since.

"Make sure you're right, then go ahead."

Anybody want to guess the Congressman? Hint: he's LONG dead. I wouldn't trust any of the current crop of Congresscritters.

Sounds easy, but it can be challenging to do it, especially working in a town where I work full of back stabbing politicos and their minions.

It doesn't matter. I live far enough away from it so I don't get dragged into it, and my life has improved immensely as a result. And so it goes.

I've heard good things about the books, and am a fan of the show. I knew it was a summertime series but hadn't remembered when that started up, I'm glad it's coming up quick. Enjoy the book!

***Thanks Sadie for the proffered bubblegum cigar, which he immediately starts to chew.***

Ahhh, yes. Bubblegum. We need to have a 'biggest bubble' contest at the meet and greet. Thanks and congratulations, Sadie!

One of my stories of my youth revolves around bubblegum and my love for grape bubblegum while playing softball. I was in a church league at the time, which had a no tobacco rule. While the home-plate umpire was discussing a call with the first-base line judge, I reached in my back pocket, brought out a pouch with the traditional red-and-white color of Red Man chewing tobacco, and stuck something in my mouth. The umpire saw me, and yelled, "Time!"

He then asked to see the pouch. I showed him. On the side it read in big bold letters, "Big League Chew - Grape Bubblegum" The umpire smiled, turned to the diamond, and yelled,

"Grape bubblegum! No foul! Play ball!"

Darn tootin' no foul. That was some good bubblegum.

I think I need to adjust my timezone. I always miss y'all!

Larry is home, potential jury duty. He can't call to find out if he's on or not until 5, so he can;t be dispatched on runs. They do this on Fridays and Wednesdays. For a trucker, that means local runs, which are in short supply as the day drivers do that. So we are losing money hand over fist this month. Stupid jury system. I am pissed off. Next time, we get him dismissed up front.

Boo for potential jury duty. Pandorra just had a round of that on Monday, and she was so upset. Her work had been super insanely busy with a project she's been really excited about, and then at the end of last week one of the big honcho EVP's spent some time thanking them and acknowledging how great things were doing and invited to take them all on a personal tour of where the new offices are being built. When she called that jury duty phone number on Sunday night and it said it was still on and she had to report, her heart sank. Luckily, after spending Monday spinning her wheels at the courthouse they came in and told them the case had been settled. Whew, close call!

Man, this day started fast and has been busy busy busy. For those who didn't catch the news, eBay just discovered a massive data breach that happened a couple months ago. The password data the bad guys got was encrypted and so far there aren't any signs peoples accounts are getting broken into, but there's no telling how long until said bad guys break the encryption. So if you have an eBay user account, go there and change your password today.

I'm wondering.... If eBay's 100-Million-plus users try to do this today, won't there be some sort of traffic jam on that particular interweb highway?

Conceivably everyone hitting it all at once would be a jam, but considering the spread of time zones and the time it takes for news to travel... I don't see it being a problem. Their servers are used to handing pretty heavy demand and spikes in traffic as part of the auction/bidding/financial transaction process, compared to that the account housekeeping is peanuts. I didn't have any trouble when I updated mine this morning, your mileage may vary.
