Sorry I didn't say much more earlier, but I'll say it now: Way to go elorrum and MDF, and all the gang with the supertrip!

And yes, I forgot the bit about putting on your own oxygen mask first.

Yesterday, I got over to the annual 'powwow for the people' at the county fairgrounds, the annual indigenous people's event, and had a great time. The organizers spent a little money to make sure the event came off just right. Indian fry bread tacos, too! If you're down in the Four Corners area, you know about Navajo tacos....well, last year I had Navajo tacos AND Hopi tacos AND Paiute tacos. Yesterday, Omaha tacos. They're all the same. The fry bread is the secret.

Work is a combination of challenging and fun. We had a small landslide threaten the lanes on US 50 outside of Jefferson City, and I've got a crew on it next week to do the investigation as the District is doing the first attempt to shore up the slope. I've got an 'imminent' rockfall problem here in Columbia to address also.

The new lady friend is off with her mother in Nebraska this weekend, and I'm quietly enjoying the weekend. Haven't turned on the TV even once. Today, I fixed my award-winning Cajun gumbo (it won a prize in a competition last year) and improved on the recipe. I wanted to make it thicker, and so I added a couple of tablespoons of corn masa. It worked out well. I used andouille sausage and chicken as the meat, and added okra, tomatoes, corn and about a pint and a half of water, and let it simmer in the crock pot all day. Also I added some chipotle pepper (that's grilled jalapeno if you don't know..I dry it and pulverize it to a powder for use), some paprika, and just a teaspoon of lime juice. I had it with some fry bread I brought home from the powwow, and it was GREAT. Something to do again. My cooking skills just keep improving with frequent use.

Maybe when I retire I can start a small restaurant to operate for lunches and dinners. I've always been good with friends, why not take it to the next level? Fast food sucks. It would be great to do lunches for people and do them affordably and well. And make a fair profit. The devil is in the planning details, which I don't want to go through right now.

I"m just off a 24 hour shift, guarding 400 hippies and "trustafarians" doing a 24 hours "EDM and dubstep for world peace" event..........egad. I got called last minute, to watch their gate and keep "non believers" out.........so lucky Looney Tune, Agent Fin, and Safety Sally agreed to go help.
Oh my , dye dye, patchouli, pot smoke wafting fro 7 series BMW's and 600 series MBZ's......and they allowed a few Subarus and others in, if full of cute young people...............

Some felt super self priveledged and righteous, all seemed to be "friends of the DJ, or promoter" and were there "at the beginning" and therefore deserved to get in free, or a discount;

Much discussion was had.

I'm glad to see MDF made it home safe, and the Elorrum is ready to take on the world!! "no stick emotional fun effect" should indeed apply, Elorrum!!!
I can't imagine, and am happy for, the fun you guys had on your trip, judging by the totally great time we had in your two nights and a day here, I'd bet your "funometer" was set on "high" the whole time!!!

and lets not forget:
THANK YOU, all who serve, and have served, to give us the (imperfect, but still arguably the best) country we have, military or civilian.

In remembrance of my grandfather I never met - may he rest in peace.

He is still remembered today, but by fewer each year, as "Doc". When he got the nick, he was in the trenches in Belgium and France. He went 'over the top' as a medic, not as a combatant. He saved many lives in World War I, in a unit that took over 50% casualties, including him...he was wounded and returned to the US. He went back to the US with a new wife - an American nurse - my grandmother, and became an American citizen (he was Canadian).He passed away late in the 1940s. He made a lasting commitment as a petroleum land man, and they used to speak of 'Doc' with awe and respect at the company.

Thank you, grandpa, for your efforts in ensuring freedom for all of us, though you never carried a weapon. We are still proud of you.

Let us all remember our Veterans and the sacrifices that they made for us, and be appreciative. Thank you.

Hello all. Hope everyone had a great weekend.
We went out to the black rock rendezvous on the playa. It was so much fun. Perfect weather, around 85 degrees, with some wind, not to much dust. Playa had some wet spots but was drivable almost everywhere. The only place that had water was the main road off of 12 entrance. I saw folks body surfing on the playa in the water filled road. We drove and then hiked up Black rock point, what a view for the top. Its so fun going 55 mph on the playa.

Damn it. Another landslide...this time off Grand Mesa near Collbran, Colorado. Three men missing. This one is bigger than the Washington State Oso landslide, with nearly eight square miles displaced. I was disenheartened to learn that they tried using an infrared-equipped drone to find any possible survivors by residuual heat signsature. They should have used a magnetometer instead, to spot the vehicles that these folks were with. That would narrow things down quite a bit.

The one we're repairing today out on US 50 is a drop in the bucket by comparison - a hundred feet long and 30 feet high. It's threatening the south outer road, but it should be OK later today. Glad we caught it when we did.

I've got about a third of my first presentation worked up on playa dust. Should I do a coffee demo for fun and kicks? Using playa dust as an additive along with vanilla and sugar to make vanilla playa coffee? Just curious if anybody is paying attention......

I win!!! Finally. I just got a notice in the mail that my request to have a parking ticket in Berkeley reviewed and dismissed has been deemed valid. Why am I writing about such a trivial matter? I got the ticket in December of 2011. It was a long fight but I win!!

BTW, just in case you men ever wondered. 15 years is a short time for a woman to hold a grudge.

grim, indeed! Reminds me of 32 years of small (in comparison) landslides in my 1/4mile 'driveway' on a steep hill that would wash out every time. Almost straight up on one side, two ruts to drive on, and almost straight down on the other. So many hours and days out there, prying boulders and shoveling... must say, I don't miss that. I can barely wield the mattock any more!

Now, chewy, sweet 'coffee'... that might have helped!

Hey Folks! I found my way back. Thanks for all of the congrats and cyber hugs...nothing quite like a newborn baby. I tried to keep up with the goings on around here while I was away, but spent most of my time herding grandkids and doing a lot of laundry and preparing a lot of meals....and then more laundry...
All seems to be going well for my daughters growing family. The new baby is adjusting well to the noise and chaos her older siblings provide.

I won't comment on each post, but I'm glad all of the travelers had such great adventures and are home safe. Yggy, sounds like you are feeling much better. Rhino, mudslides scare the crap out of me. Ratty- you go girl. Fishy - stupid broken wheel...

I will now ease into panic mode on playa prep. It is fast approaching and there is a lot left to do.

I've got a couple decent-sized bags of playa dust from my first and second burns tucked away in storage someplace. I grabbed it space pirate/scoundrel style, no permits or anything. I used to keep it in our loft, and would occasionally tease my girlfriend about opening it up in a less-than-controlled environment indoors (veterans know that shit gets everywhere), but she didn't think that was as funny as I did. I mainly keep it for occasional testing of fabric and materials, and kept it handy so I could occasionally send a small packet of it to curious newbies in faraway places. Even though I clearly labeled the package so as not to cause distress between the DEA and Homeland Security types, I noticed that packages with playa were taking considerably longer to reach their destinations. D'oh... so future care packages will be dust-free.

In the usual Monday holiday tradition, this Tuesday seems to have piled on double the crazy and double the hectic. Over the weekend we learned that our storage space was moving down the street (the company has two locations), and that we needed to get all our shit sorted out asap since they were going to be picking up and moving our container in a few days. Man, that was a surprise! So I called the office first thing this morning, and apparently they hadn't updated their computer with our new address when we moved so we missed the notice. Fortunately our section of the facility isn't moving until later in the week, so I could try and get 'er done. We don't have it filled with fine china or faberge eggs or anything, but it did take a few hours work to batten down the hatches a bit so that when the side-loader scoops up the container and then puts it down at the new joint, there won't be any mass destruction. Then sometime late next week, I'll have time to dive back in and put things back and maybe even re-organize some stuff.

Memorial day also seems to really be when things start to heat up on the playa planning front, over the last couple days it seems like the volume of messages/emails/im's/etc I get have doubled. And OMG, there are so many epic and amazing projects and camps and MV's and stuff happening this year! I'm also really excited for my camp's plans, lots of art and weirdness and fun and a really great bunch of people. I'm also psyched for a campmate's housewarming party. He actually got the place a year ago, but then spent the summer designing and building all the art installations in the wall displays of the ziggurat. And then he's spent the last 8 months setting up his workshop studio and then building something awesome in his backyard. Part landscaping, part art installation - I'm looking forward to finally getting to see his place. And speaking of looking forward to things, we're REALLY excited about Reno this weekend, that shindig at the Morris Burner Hotel is gonna be AWESOME!

Speaking of which, I've got to go pick the girly up at the train station. Then it's off to the shops and back to work on playa projects
