Flipside Austin May 22-26, 2014

Flipside Austin is in two weeks. I am really getting revved up.
In my mind, its a chance to test all the stuff we have designed for BM, and meet local burners, and have a uniquely Texas experience.
Who is coming?

They have a for-shit web site. But, seems like a nice bunch. Maybe we can help....
I was going to help with the pre-event cleanup, but caught the flu. Did you go? How was it?

Only have two more projects, and a hundred things at work, until we can leave.

We'll be there! We are also testing some new stuff for the big burn. Built a dome and are working on a shade to go over our tent. We'll see how we like them.

This is our first flipside, and we're super excited. Just the husband and me the first two days, and then our kids will join us for the weekend. We'll be camped out in the badlands. Look for the camo-net covered dome, and pop in to say hi!

As loaded and prepared as i can be tonight. SUPER EXCITED!!!
Taking over 200 bacon tamales for taste testing... Dragging along several virgins (officially) for decoratiin. Trying for a new speed record setting up the dome....
And ART and MUSIC... If i were male, i would not be able to pee straight

Just about back. Takes longer for your mind to adjust than for your feet to find their way home.
What a fun 4 days. We were so focused on testing systems that we didnt adventure as far as we could have. But the satafaction of seeing ideas work was a thrill

Some photos- Flipside was about 2500 people. Mostly boyscout/camping tents under really big pecan trees. Excellent light quality.
But, I'm a terrible photographer - and am not posting any photos of humanoids or hippies.

It was so great to meet you guys! And those tamales... woo. Amazeballs.

I was disappointed we didn't get to hang out more and actually talk. We walked by Fish out of Water, but didn't see you. We just never made it back over there. To be honest, this was the kids first burn and my husband had several fire shifts, so this burn was really hectic.

But we wanted you to know how much we appreciated the tamales and how awesome it was you took the time to come find us. Hopefully we meet again!!!

Great to meet you, Ms Kitty!! Anyone camping in a geodesic already has the cool-o-meter into the green, but you folks pegged the meter.

Ms Kitty has a fine set of young gentlemen she is raising. Enthusiastic, helpful, and SOLID. I had quite a pleasant chat about Minecraft with her youngest. (He was wearing a Periodic Table Of The Minecraft Elements, so us nerds tend to do the bonding thingie. hehehe) Hubby is a class act all the way. Pulling multiple fire shifts is a tough act to follow! What a neat family!

Hope to see all you guys in the dust! When your kids are old enough to make the big burn, we would be happy to lend a hand so you and Mr. can get some play time.

They really are great guys. I can't believe just how smoothly they fell into the burner community. I was a little worried, with the older one approaching his teens, but not a single fuss was made. They took to it like ducks to water. I am not ashamed to say I was very proud of them.

Flipside was a great beginning event for them. Even the torrential rain during exodus was fun, for a little bit at least. Our only regrets were that we didn't make it to visit all the people and camps we set out to visit. But that's pretty typical for a burn.

The eldest must feel a bit left out.. The youngest is such a conversation magnet !!!
Next time, i will make a more even effort to speak with them both

How did grilling the tamales work out?
I usually steam them. Since its an original recipe, i dont have that data point.
The exterior is not as greasy as traditional tamales.
Did your boys try them with ravioli sauce?

They actually grilled very well. Just put them off to the side of the direct flame, closed the lid, and flipped them once. The cheese melted well, the husks didn't burn, and they were delicious. Even the older one, who hates cheese, loved them. We didn't use the ravioli sauce. They were good just as they were. Very filling too.

Final word... Great success! Grills great, and not greasy.
