It would be a horrible shame if my ego powered awesomeness machine didn't come to the playa. Since I'm too lame to do anything about it, will you do it for me?

I am constantly amazed by the people who call Burning Man home when they've never even been there yet. That seems like an awfully high expectation to put on a place you've never been, and setting high expectations seems like a sure-fire setup for disappointment.

NO SHIT!

Every time I arrive, I get out of the truck and ask myself, 'What the fuck am I doing here?" No expectations, and then all is well with the world in short order.

There probably ought to be a function that doesn't allow access, even read-only, to Page Two until a certain amount of time passes since your registration.
Hmm. I wonder how long it should be?

I almost feel like a cheater. I've been here since this version of eplaya went up, but since I had already been going to BM three years when I registered, I was never on here as a new-to-all-this virgin. I never had to pass the trial by fire that the new ones go through now. I have, however, been tolerating that goddamm unjonharley for about a decade. That should count for something..

Just chalk it up to people who need more help and reassurance than others. I'm glad I didn't visit this place before the event, because I had no idea what the burn was about until I visited other than "some huge camp of hippies in the middle of nowhere for a week with some art and stuff" (which was partially wrong) and the need to have enough supplies for a week. Everything was new, and having no expectations was excellent.

I joined the forum to reply about what place in line I was in the ticket queue. So I do think I passed the ePlaya trial-by-fire: you really don't get to experience ePlaya without witnessing the shit that goes down in the ticket forum.

I disagree with the idea of hiding the page two thread, even for a single post. If something is so mean-spirited that you're afraid of the reaction of a new user who found the thread, it's probably too mean-spirited to even belong here. This is a good place to vent, and we've got a healthy disclaimer on the first post in the thread, but I think the transparency makes for accountability, and helps keep things in check.

Bbadger, I'm constantly amazed by the number of people who talk about their posh and luxurious college educations in the same post as they boast about things like discounted tickets or some other thing they seem to feel entitled to. To those who didn't have the luxury of getting loans/grants/handouts/etc, it's like nails on a chalkboard.

Tutu yes , college , sure. Go ahead.
My over educated self knows that the real lessons are hard earned and "whatevah" way I get them.
Which still leaves out the truth of a few of the most facile minded persons I know getting it on playa time.

Heh. This was me. Joining eplaya definitely helped me. It's greatest resource is not the facts or advice on how to build shelter, or cook food, or what to wear, but the supportive community that is just the right mix of "You can do it" and "Quit your whining"

I understand in the past it was far more combative. But the mix now feels just like the playa, harsh and helpful in equal measures.
