Exodus Question

Post by xdwingdx » Wed May 28, 2014 1:15 pm

ok ok

I know posting in the Eplaya is going to get me some serious snark action, but I do have a question about Exodus Policy.

When leaving, i notice some cars parked on the side of the highway, either broken down or resting before making the full drive.

What is the deal with leaving your car for a few hours, biking back onto the Playa and enjoying the Temple Burn.

the last two years we have watched the temple burn from the exodus line, trying to avoid the major congestion that follows the temple burn.

Can you get a parking ticket for leaving your car somewhere?

Can you pay the 20 bucks to re-enter the playa and enjoy the burn? ride our bikes in an out?

and no need to reply with "if everyone did this it would be nightmare" not everyone is going to attempt this, probably just me.

You can be ticketed and possibly towed.

I think that the BLM and NHP would be especially aggressive during the burn, because this is potentially a very nasty thing if multiple people do it.
Plus, the shoulder is so soft, that you really don't want to be on it, unless you absolutely have to.

Why not just bike out to the temple burn and then leave on Tuesday when there is no line?

Or heck, just get in the line after the temple burn (or man burn, or whatever) and suck it up?

I don't understand people trying to not wait in line. There is going to be a line if you leave at a prime time. Plan on leaving on a non-prime time, no line. And if there happens to be a line, enjoy the line. Be zen with the line. Bring drinks and food and make a party.

Crazy idea: Stay a day or two extra and help with MOOP cleanup.

denibel nailed it..

You may get one hell of a ticket.. Putting some cops life in danger.. They would be very unhappy to have to check an abandoned car for reason..

Last year we were stuck in the peak of peaks, around 8 hours total. So much happened in those hours that it ended up being a highlight of the trip. In fact, looking back now I might say it was the most relaxing and enjoyable part of my burn!

Fuck waiting in Lines, that's why.

Can't stay too long after the burn, have to go back to cubicle life..

the point of the thread is trying to avoid the exodus madness, not jump in the middle of it. Leaving right after the burns is a huge Rush. best to go before or long after. I understand the concept of enjoying the line once stuck in it, it is a good time to catch up on your Burn Journal and try to recap what happened each day of the week.

If a ticket is likely, then this idea wont happen. we drive directly home to Costa Mesa, the goal is to be safe while driving, avoiding an extended line out helps with our alertness.

putting a cops life in danger? can we try to be a little more dramatic?

anyways, thanks for the feedback.

re: Putting a cop in danger.. The road to Gerlach is a mess exodus nights.. Stopping and getting out of your car can get you killed.. There is a vehicle coming onto the pavement every 7 seconds.. Your foolish idea could put people in danger.. There is no parking along that road.. You could fake a break down and leave your car.. Then again it may get towed.. The line was stopped for two hours for me.. Than I could see a tow truck working way out on the highway..

I made a mistake last year.. Left in the evening.. I'm not a good night driver and I was sleepy.. Bout forty miles to a safe turn off for some sleep..Leaving in the wee morning hours will put me in Cedarville in time for the Fire Dept. pancake feed..

It would take you longer to drive out and pedal back, then pedal back out again to your vehicle than it would to just have your vehicle packed and ready to go once the temple burn ends. If you leave immediately, exodus times aren't typically that long.

Also, your vehicle would likely be ticketed and towed. Re-entry (especially on foot or bike) at that time may also not be possible. The cars you've seen in the past have either had people in them, or (in cases of breakdowns) are already known to cops/tow drivers. On top of that, biking on any part of that road by day is dangerous, after nightfall you'd be a major hazard to yourselves and others. If you're concerned about safety, the last thing you should consider is biking along a busy 2 lane highway with no soft shoulder after dark. Occam's razor applies here.

If driving to southern California is such a task, leave a whole day earlier and stay in a hotel in Reno and sleep. Get up and drive the whole way home.

Maybe leave on Saturday before the Man burn like some of my old timey burney friends do.

We've done this a couple of times. Super easy exodus out - no mess, no fuss, no wait.

That's when I've left the last three years and it's been an excellent time to leave.

Question to those who have left right around Temple burn: Is leaving, say, right before Temple burn a good time to leave exodus-wise? I'm spoiled from leaving pre-Man Burn where I have yet to wait a single moment in line.

Last year we left around 2:00pm on Sunday due to the rain scare and we were still on gate road when the temple burned that night. It took us about 10 or 12 hours to hit pavement.

This year I'm staying until Monday or Tuesday.

I left later than I expected. Maybe 11am on Sunday and maybe it was 4 hours? I was having a good time meeting people and gifting (and sitting in an air conditioned car) so I didn't freak out and the actual times are a little blurry. My goal is to aim a little earlier on Sunday this year. Say 10am. Depends on how much breakdown I do on Saturday.

Not for me. The burns themselves aren't part of why I go. The featured presentation starts the moment I hit the playa and start meeting new people, and by Burn night, I've been there 8 days usually, and am done. Always sad to leave knowing I won't be back for a year, but that'd be the case no matter when I leave.

@VultureChow - I left one year about 7 am on Sunday, and there was very little line to get out. Campmates this year reported similar experiences leaving at that time.

The temple burn is overrated. Leave early. A 15 minute line and daylight drive is awesome.

Don't like lines? Cry us a river.

Anyway, I'm sure there were tons of asshole hippies who tried pulling this stunt in the past and had their shit ruined by law enforcement and the gate. That's why we don't see this more often.

Think you're late leaving now? Now imagine being towed or forced back to receive your shiny new ticket -- that is if you find your car where you abandoned it.

Maybe the LEO will even use this opportunity to search your car since you gave them some possible cause.

And, since Burning Man is on Federal land - those tickets would be Federal, with the appropriate consequences if not paid.

Walking or biking on Gate Road during Exodus is also a prime opportunity to get run over. Seriously, I see it every year. Don't do it!!

No No, Don't try to bike or walk on the gate road at night.. Walk on the open playa.. That is where the LEO travel at 40 mph in the dark dust.. If your lucky you will get hit and sail the rest of the way in/out..

What do you mean 40 mph, hardly - more like 80+ mph. I have been nearly hit by LE with in my shift truck with the amber light flashing, high beams on. - Someone walking is pretty much invisible to a fast-moving vehicle. Still will get caught by the Perimeter folks though. Walking on the open playa is at minimum a Trespassing ticket...
