Seeking Camp Members

Post by FjordFollower » Fri May 30, 2014 11:22 pm

Greetings all,

I'm passively searching for some other virgin burners to possibly make camp together. I'm also looking for fellow Minnesotans for a coordinated ride down to the event. Anyone interested? I come with some large assets! I've got a solar generator, lights, and a kick ass 16ft yurt. More supplies to follow of course. Anyone wish to explore the opportunity, email me.

Putting this over in the theme camp area as you already have a thread in Introductions.

Beautiful yurt. Be prepared to strap/stake it down far more than you are used to doing, and bring a tent for back up. I've seen two of these fail dramatically out there. Personal friends' yurts, very traumatic.

Rule of thumb for Black Rock Desert: imagine that yurt set up on the roof of your vehicle on the freeway, and secure it to survive that. When windstorms hit, that's what your shelter needs to be able to take.

But yeah what AntiM said - beautiful yurt!

That's a real nice yurt you have there. Be a shame if something were to happen to it. /mafiavoice

The problem I see is all those little cross points. When the wind pushes on one side of the structure, it will cause them to buckle and split from each other. The wood itself won't break but the joints will get a lot of stress. Usually these things have a single point at the joint so that they can pivot when you accordion out the structure. Just my experience with something similar but thin steel and not wood. After 10 hours of straight on wind pushing one corner, that whole side was buckled in. And there's no way to guy wire it because the problem is a downward force.
