When is 'Event Registration' opening

Post by Casanova » Mon May 05, 2014 3:46 pm

Anyone know when they are opening up the Playa Event Registration for 2014.

All it says is, 'If you submit early, your event may get printed in the What Where When—the listing of events and activities happening at Burning Man.'

Thanks

Usually July, I think. Rest assured, none of us actually know. Keep reading JRS...

Historically, the playa events calendar opens up in mid-June. A notice goes out in the Jack Rabbit Speaks when that happens. The first 1550 listings (which take only 2-3 days) added will make it into the printed What Where When guide, and the rest are in the online version of the guide, which is accessible on the web, at the playa info desk at the Reno airport, at the playa info desk on-playa, and usually also in the various smartphone apps (the app developers do a 'data dump' of all the listings in the calendar a week or so before the burn, and then update their apps so people can download and have that info on-board their device). The trick for the smartphone apps is to remind yourself to update your app right before you leave for the playa.

As Andy mentioned, the calendar will open up for submissions on June 12th. However, this year only the first 960 submissions will make the cut for the printed amateur's guide.

Well hopefully whoever sends out Placement releases and the JRS can get on the same page in the future as far as dates and numbers.

Placement email - Placement Newsletter #2

In this issue:

1 Playa Event Directory and the WWW - Friday June 14

The on-line submission form and directory will be available through the Burning Man event, but only the events submitted before July 1st, 2014 – or the first 1500 received, whichever comes first – will also be included in the What? Where? When? guide

JRS June 12th ...... only events submitted before July 1 (or the first 960 received, whichever comes first)

The July 1st "deadline"must be some sort of inside joke.

@zorro sings - the cutoff is 960 submissions or July 1st (since it's got to get sent off to the printer), whichever comes first. In years past the cutoff date mattered more than the cutoff number, but as more people bury their heads in the amateur's guide and more people try to use it as a vehicle to plug their camp's events, it's filled up much more quickly. It still winds up containing only a very tiny percentage of the things that are going on at Burning Man, and doesn't even represent the top 1% or 2% of the stuff out there - it's just the first things entered.

@Jovankat - when you say "this page" what page are you referring to? The art installation questionnaires are due by June 11th at noon pacific time. After that you can still make and bring art to the playa, but the project won't make it into the printed/electronic guides. You'd bring it to the ARTery on the playa and go through the registration process as a 'walk-in' and the team would get the piece placed. I think that at that point they'd have information about it at the ARTery and the Playa Info kiosk on the playa.

Well thanks for the final word on dates and numbers. My point however was why create unecessary confusion? Was placement using last years template or something?

What is harder to understand is the quote above.
I mean what are you saying here about "amateurs"?That anyone who uses the guide is some kind of inexperienced BRC citizen who doesn't(really) get it yet? That all the cool stuff is known only by the Burning Man "professional"?
As far as "a vehicle to plug their camps".... Seems to me that has always been true.Camps plugging their events in the WWW.

The usefulness of the guide point-counterpoint has been going on here for years and not my intent to rev it up again.I just know that with 16 separate events scheduled at our camp I need to be in the WWW if I hope to see anyone there. That has been true for the 14 previous years we have set up and will be true this year as well.I am sure there are many other camps in the same boat.

The last three years the cutoff has been hit very fast and it will only get worse as I think you would agree..So my solution would be to cut the description portion.20-25 characters with just the title of the event and your camp/location.Surely people could figure the rest out if interested. Now you get 6 maybe 7 x more entries in.

So, you're not seeing any attendance from the phone aps?

Is anyone?
(Yes, I know you don't quiz people who attend your events, but it's a question worth asking, if only to continue this discussion--zorro gets to skip it.)

Is anyone using it to good purpose?

Just curious.
I know one person who picks out one event each day--from the web--writes it down in a notebook, and makes that event whatever else might happen. Last year one of those was the pirate ice shift.
And I'm one of those who still hasn't opened the guide from 2012.

Well that did not take long.By my rough count at 5 pm yesterday they had over 1200 entries.I logged on exactly when it opened and two of my events were"still in queue " five hours later. They were published a bit later but who knows.

If the printed WWW is to maintain any relevance to what is really going on at BRC something has to change.Either they make an encyclopedia out of it or see my soloution above.Use the web site(virtually unlimited words and space)as the filler/backup to the published "event title".Not hard for anyone.

Seriously - that is one of the funniest lines I've read on here in ages. I don't think the WWW has ever had relevance beyond being A Beginners Guide to Things You'll Never Make It To (Or That Don't Happen). It's a crutch from the outside world for people who are afraid to let the actual randomness of the event wash over them, and who are closed off to playadipity happening. The online version (which you can download through apps right before you hit the playa) exists for those people. Personally, I'd rather discover things randomly - even the events my own camp is throwing.

Burn how you want. If you want to target activities, target them. If you don't, you don't.

Personally seeing my little camp printed in that guide the first year we provided silk made me cry. Of course standing in the street looking at the dye shop made me cry. After dye day I cried. Lol I have crying issues.

Something about seeing it in print made me feel more accepted and a gave me a feeling of belonging. If it's a crutch, so be it.

Another thing to keep in mind is some of the things in there are jokes. You could show up for dildo making one0one and find out it was someone in the camp messing with someone else in the camp. Ask one eyed dick about story time.

What a condescending response coming from a moderator. For someone who goes about saying there is no"right"way to burn you sure seem to take a hard line on this particular subject.

By the way,1,200 entries in 5 hours shows that some people disagree with your opinion on the WWW and its usefulness.

Down Boy. Mods are just people and they have opinions and feelings too. They aren't paid 'yes' men. They aren't paid. Let em vent, argue and state the facts as they know em. The WWW should be made of TP. That would be more useful.

For the last time and then I am done with this thread. This argument has been going on for awhile. You may regard it as TP.Many do and nothing wrong with that.We on the other hand depend on it.Our events are geared to specific crowds and randomly discovering UK Glam Night on Tuesday between 9-11 night happens only in someone elses vision of a succesful engagement. My suggestion on how to improve the WWW process, which seems broken, did not deserve the scorn of someone who,by their title, should IMO be somewhat above the fray.

A) A mod makes sure the board runs smoothly - we do not stop being members of the community, we do not stop being Burners, we do not stop having opinions. I'm not sure if any of us would do this if we lost the right to have our own opinions - we are not robots, nor do I wish to become one.
Sorry if I was too blunt for your tastes, but, yes, like most people, I do have some strong opinions, and I do in all honestly see the guide as a crutch against the randomness. That said, I would never knock it out of someones hands, and if someone asked for help finding something while looking at it I would happily help them out.

B) I mentioned the online version of the WWW, and the apps, even if I disparaged them. There is no way in a city our size to have a printed guide that could actually be useful anymore, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it end up as app-based only in the next few years - it just makes more sense, and becomes more functional for what it is (which, honestly, is basically your idea sans the printed guide of headlines). An app-based version could also be searchable, so if you wanted to find camps playing Glam (or "music with words", or "retro"), you could enter a key word & find all the events for the week that fit that. Functional, and since almost everyone has a little portable computer now (that comes with a free phone that nobody uses!) it fits more with modern times.

All of that is true Eric, but even now I can pull down the www guide from my first year, fan the pages, and get a little bit of that playa dust up my nose.

You could print the online addition, take it to the playa, and then save it with your playa ephemera.

I still maintain that for the last several years now, the free apps available for smartphones represent the best tool for the fear-of-missing-out crowd. Grab the app, and check for updates before you leave for the event. There'll be one good-sized one in the week before, it will contain all the events added over the course of the summer, usually along with camp listings, dj lineups, and other handy info.

Well bummer. Went away for the weekend and missed the few hour opportunity to post all of our great events. If you are curious, the full list is here: https://sites.google.com/site/campdoa/t ... vents_2014

But now that there is no chance to be in the printed WWW book, I am wondering about something..... If we are not "printed" does that mean that next year when we are trying to get placement, do we exist as a theme camp with lots to offer? Or a theme camp with no events? Hopefully they look at the online version.

Being included in the book has no bearing on placement whatsoever.

Further, camps have no requirement to post events to the playa events calendar (unless maybe they promised to in their questionnaire).
