(((Yggy))) I wanna go hiking with you!
And we were not really lost, just sadly misdirected by our GPS units (both of them, Elorrum's & mine, wanted us to take the Big Highway only). We did eventually find the scenic route, the highlight of which was the combination outdoor shower & BBQ we spotted in a beergarden at Chinese Camp.

A lightweight little Kahr or something would deal with a dog just fine plus you have a few more rounds to play with.

Ha, actually, a Park Ranger was once famously quoted as saying that his job was a) to protect people from the animals, b) to protect animals from the people, and c) most of all, to protect people from the people.

with a .44 or .45, one shot, no wounding, no suffering.
it's not the dogs fault, yet, if mine, or me, are in danger, the dog will neither bite, nor suffer.

*raises a glass to mark the 70th anniversary of D-Day*
Sunday's not the day you need to be focused on, focus on the day (or the night before) you leave. That's the target day to get it all ready to go, so you can load out and hit the road with minimal clusterfuckery. Right now I'm both feeling calm and in a mad panic, all at once. I know I've got plenty of time to get all the bits sorted, but there's a part of me that wishes I had it all done already so I could relax and enjoy the summer or something.
In other news, three cheers for MOAR POWER! Or at least more computing power - we finally placed an order for my new computer last night. It should hopefully get here in a week or two, and serve up between double and triple the rendering horsepower I've got now and make short work of nearly anything else I can throw at it.
TGIF - hopefully all your Fridays zip along quickly and without incident, leaving the door wide open for your weekend plans. Cheers!

Arguably my dad claimed he, or one of his "team" were first, because they swam in hours before the actual landing started, to load the obstacles. He said when they first came onto the beach,it was dead silent, a rare sniper at times, because the Germans didn't want to give locations away. They got all set up in relative peace, until the first wave hit...........

Dad was Navy, in the Pacific. Never told one war story, would not speak of it at all. I never saw his early photos in uniform until after he died and I found them in a box in the closet of his dark room.

Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
My dad flew bombers in WWII. I think those guys had about the worst survivabity rate. He held the Distinguished Flying Cross. You had to do something pretty epic for that but I never heard much either.
One I did hear was about blacking out when they heard airplanes coming. If my dad listened to them and said they were American they would leave lights on.
I don't know if that's a fish tale or not but it's not that far-fetched. I inherited my dad's "gearhead" genes and I can do the same thing, at least with older stuff. There are several engines I can specifically identify by sound and even a few vehicles I can identify by the sound of the doors closing, so I wouldn't be too shocked if that really happened.

*wanders in, starts ECM*
wow, good on your Dad, Cap'n!!
yeah CAp'n, I'd totally believe in IDing engine sounds. I live on the flight path of an Air Force base, and can ID several planes just by engine (C5A, U2, (long ago SR71)). same as you say, with autos and trucks.
I had two friends who flew bombers, or in them, too.
Sort of cool, I made a tombstone for one of the squad that shot down Yamamoto (?). I drew his P38 on his stone.
Just made one (pre need) for a B17 pilot, who also flew in Korea. Best of his stories, was, he flew night "search and destroy" missions.............he'd follow the gleaming moon on railroad tracks, looking for trains...when the tracks disappeared, he knew he had to pull up hard, because they probably just went into a tunnel.
wow, Brass Balls? yeah..............

Good Morning All !
Thank you for the war stories..my parents came from Spain and Germany and met on Ellis Island
They never spoke of war issues so I appreciate all
Today is a special day of musical festivity and friends coming over before to hopefully take some of my early belongings
Serious effort to turn into minimalist is not easy

MyLarry hauls home stuff which may be useful to someone some day. He gets that from his hoarder mom. My stuff has memory associations, which makes it difficult for me to release. I'm pretty good at giving random stuff away though.

Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
yeah good points AntiM. I can get rid of "stuff" much easier than if it has attachments. I bring stuff home, but also give a lot away. I sort of run a "give and take" operation, where folks call me if they have stuff, and if good, I take it here, then, if folks need stuff, often I have it, for them.

My Dad was in the Aleutian islands for several years of the war. They were building the highway and waiting for the enemy attacks that never happened. He was very proud of his time in the Army and continued to keep in touch with his buddies. I'm not overly patriotic but I'm VERY grateful to those who serve or served in the military. And I tell them so at every chance. So....Thank You Vets!!
