Re: One item for BMan 2014 a day
Spent an hour on the phone helping a confused newbie. Yes Burning Man is about self reliance but it also greatly helps to receive advice and information from those who've actually been there (even if they've only been a couple of times themselves.) I definitely would have struggled a great deal if not for all the info and support I'd gotten here my first time. Now, I pass it along to other first-timers. THANK YOU E-PLAYANS!

Couple of spare tire tubes for my Mongoose Beast and some Reflectix for the top of the tent. Check and check!

Re: One item for BMan 2014 a day
Hey,
I'm considering buying a Mongoose Beast. I know nothing about bicycles. Where do I get the spare tubes? Are these standard? How does this whole ordeal work?
Would hate to have a $350 bicycle rendered useless because I didn't get the right spare parts I need...
Thankssssss

Re: One item for BMan 2014 a day
Almost nothing on the Beast is standard. BTW, a Beast should be more like $200. The newer one, Dolomite, is more expensive and has better brakes and gearing.
I googled for 4" fat bike tube and found this link immediately: http://www.rei.com/product/859032/surly ... 26-x-30-40
It's a Presta valve. This one has a Schraeder:
I'm sure there are other sources.

Re: One item for BMan 2014 a day
My bad, I meant the Dolomite (http://www.walmart.com/ip/26-Mongoose-M ... d/29741123)
I don't think I need better breaks (or gearing?) for the Playa, but I couldn't find the Beast anywhere online...
EDIT - found it for cheaper ($260) here: http://www.farmandfleet.com/products/82 ... 5I5RJRdV1U
However, more googling shows people are very unsatisfied with its weight. Now I'm lost again

Re: One item for BMan 2014 a day
The weight of the bike is a big concern for normal riding with hills and stuff, or distance riding, but these things were awesome on the playa. They just glide over all the ruts, potholes, and soft drifts that bog down normal bikes. I brought a mountain bike one year, and the Beast was incredibly better. There were a few out there last year, and I kept having to stop and let people take rides on mine. I expect there to be a LOT of fat tire bikes out there this year. The only difficulty I had was biking into a stiff headwind, if you get the Dolomite the gearing will help a lot there.

Guess this counts...
Pumped up the tires on the bike and took it for a short ride. Two months to get used to riding again. Minor adjustment needed somewhere on the front because of a click click click. The dust should take care of that

I am one of the 4,000. I received my low income ticket award letter today. I am relieved to know that I am actually going in 7 weeks. Time to get serious. I need to buy that traditional bag of tube socks, and start packing the non-perishables.

Got all my hotel reservations made *whew* and made a drawing of what We Know So Far about our BDC Village Map. Yikes. Sorted out the storage unit renewal. Ay-yi-yikes.
Still letting the sewing projects pile up. But I have got the lights for them, now.

Vodka redbull Slushie Test day.
I have assembled the troops. We will be attempting to figure out the perfect mix ratios.
This could get messy.
Will report back with results.

Oops! 11 weeks to go, not 7.
I think I wished July away. silly me. Whew, I certainly do not want to be there a month early, that crap bucket would get a little full...and ripe.

We picked up our camp beds yesterday. Self-inflating foam beds. Won't take up much space on the drive down and will be pretty comfortable.

Got them in the return area at REI (it's nice to have a membership). Some great deals up there.

We have one of those, queen size. Top it with memory foam, and you have the plushest bed on the playa. We use flannel sheets and a quilt with ours. We have managed to keep ours nearly dust free after all these years.

Re: One item for BMan 2014 a day
For those with the traditional 'day job' schedule, you've basically got 10 weekends left (assuming that the weekend before the gate you're probably traveling to the playa). That's 10 days (11 if you add in 4th of July), or only 8 days if you've got big 4th of July weekend plans. Use your weekends well, and anything you can get done in the evening means less rushing around you have to do on an off day.
I started work on an Eridu Society Survival Guide over the weekend. I was inspired after seeing the awesome PolyParadise camp survival guide Scotto made for his camp.

Finished my warm coat two weeks ago and my Mom got to model it yesterday:

Also, half of the pewter claw necklaces got done this weekend. Should be able to finish the last half today and tomorrow.

Cooler time!!! Another big checklist item taken off the list. Costco for the win.
Rated as the most AWESOME cooler EVER!

Sidenote- It doubles as a bath tub. Somehow the manufacturer didn't even mention that part.

Also picked up our LED headlamps for $8.00 there. Score.

Vulturechow you make the best swag. Those are great! Utensil wipes? Really? I want some. I don't cook much so they would be perfect for me, (and Savannah who cooks not at all). Hey. Savannah you should come over to my camp and have some cheese whiz, crackers, sardines, potato chips, salami, canned cold fruit and beer. For desert we have cookies and trail mix with no chocolate. There are some other things but that is most of my staples for the week. Livin' high.
Those aren't buttermilk biscuits I'm lying on Savannah

First time poster, long-time lurker here. This place is a treasure trove of information, and for that I thank you all!
Last night I prototyped some swag after scoring some bulk necklace chains. I used sliced wine corks, image transfer tape, and tiny screw eye bolts to create them. Here's the first one. I'm creating a few varieties using other choice four-letter words.
