Hexayurts- how to remove the logos on my Xci 286?
Building lots of hexayurts tomorrow. Ended up on Hunter XCI 286 panels. Anybody ever tried to get the logos off? we were going to try acetone, but I don't want to screw up the coating.

Those coatings and labels aren't generally made to be removed easily (or at all). One of the downsides of working with bare contractor materials like that..is that you're working with bare contractor materials.
Re: Hexayurts- how to remove the logos on my Xci 286?
Are the logos on both sides? Because with the correct attention to cutting and taping, the logos will all be inside.

Logo on shiny side, white no shiny or logos on the other. so, unfortunately logos on the outside unless we can remove them, paint them or co-apt them in to other arty things.

Why do something to your yurt that could potentially damage it or reduce efficiency? Because logos aren't cool, man? Pshh. KISS. Build the yurt for maximum efficiency and structural stability. Ignore the logos.

I think it's either cover 'em or just forget 'em. It's not that big a deal. Everyone here understands that you're trying to eliminate corporate advertising and respects your efforts, but it's not always practical. No one removes all the emblems from their cars & trucks, peels the stickers off their Honda generators, or tapes over the labels on their PBR beer cans.

I applaud you for trying to remove, hide, or otherwise obscure the logos; I agree with the Captain that it isn't the end of the world, but at the same time I wish more people made the effort.
If you have shiny tape leftover from assembly, you could obscure the logos with it, or perhaps use painter's tape for something less permanent.

A light spattering of spray paint? Or will that flake off?

wiping down the panels with a rag soaked in acetone is really bad for your nervous system and leads to seizures

I LOVE the smell of acetone. If I had to be a drug user I would be a huffer. All that shiny gold residue around my mouth could be construed as make-up. Sure I wouldn't live a year and I wouldn't have 2 brain cells to rub together but, I'm just sayin.

foil tape from the big box stores is pretty cheap all told (look in the duct/vent aisle) you can use a bit to change up the logo into something fun.

How about you just don't bother?
Hell, you've already advertised the specific brand more in the topic's title and topic post than anyone will ever notice at the event.
Anyone who cares about logos on a hex yurt anymore than state labels on license plates really need to get a life -- especially at the event.

BBadger, got to say I disagree, but you are right in that this is a minor item at best. My disagreement is aesthetic. TTITD is (for me) a visual spectacle. Anything, especially something this easy to accomplish that adds rather than detracts from the artistic visuals is worth doing. I would love to see every camp a forest of gothic spires, art deco curves, and modernist masses. Is this realistic? fuck no. Does my camp live up to this aspiration? not really. ...but again why discourage the intent?

Re: Hexayurts- how to remove the logos on my Xci 286?
Whatever you do don't use house paint 2 days before you get to the desert.
2010, 2 days before the burn I got the bright idea to paint the roof panels of my yurt. Had some interior paint laying around... My daughter and I arrive on the playa Monday at noon but are to excited/zit red to put the yurt up right away. We can sleep in the box truck that night, no biggie. Well it rains a little that night. The next morning we build the yurt.
All is well until we go to put the roof together. The tape won't stick because of the slight humidity combined with the water based paint. Oh fuck! It did dry out and with the extra tape it all turned out okay but it was a "fuck" moment for sure.
I also had to peel and wipe off the paint from the panels before I could reuse them the next year. The flaky paint would've been a moop nightmare.

Oh my god, it's HUGE!
Re: Hexayurts- how to remove the logos on my Xci 286?
I understand the desire to make something uniquely yours, by covering up the shiny foil surface with some paint, but that's negating a big reason to use foil insulation panels rather than plywood. I would say removing logos on the panels (or building with dual-reflective panels, logos inside the yurt) is a valid concern not for branding issues, but for making the exterior as reflective as possible to reduce the absorbed heat.

Re: Hexayurts- how to remove the logos on my Xci 286?
If this hex yurt were part of an art project, this whole issue of covering up the logos wouldn't be coming up because they would be covered up anyway by the artwork. In this case however, this is not about "artistic visuals" anymore than painting over graffiti.Shoeshine wrote:BBadger, got to say I disagree, but you are right in that this is a minor item at best. There are no "artistic visuals" to be had whether there are logos or not. This is a hex-yurt, a structure created specifically for the comfort of the inhabitants. Otherwise, it's just a shiny cube made of construction materials. There's no art going on here. It's not part of an art project. It's a camp object like a car or monkey hut.
Some people like to decorate the logos on their rental trucks. That's great. It's like people who take time to create costumes for the event. However, like costumes, there is no requirement or really any greater purpose to decorating logos or dressing up. Do it if you want to, but don't feel compelled to do it because you think some busybody is going to care.
So why discourage all this? Because the OP could be concentrating on actual "artistic visuals" rather than wasting time covering up logos people shouldn't be paying attention to anyway (and if they are, tell those people to get a life).

Joking aside, I believe that if we examined that question, we'd find that post-Nixon, there were more and perhaps more vindictive.

I agree with the suggestion that if the logos aren't too big, use foil tape. It's about $13/roll from goodbuyguys.com and a roll goes a long way and is very easy to apply.
The other thing you might consider is contact paper. It's not cheap, but it has probably enough adhesive on it that dust won't make it fall off and it can cover a large area. You can get it in thousands of patterns, maybe it can be your decoration.
