My lovely bride and I went to the school last night...
The 17 year old is failing 4 classes, mostly due to failing to turn-in homework... and his efforts in other classes have dropped since he unintentionally shoved his former girlfriend to the ground on Halloween weekend...

The 14 year old is failing language arts because of homework and no daily journal entries...

fuck.

but please note, every single teached considers both boys to bright... they just aren't doing the work.

I went through the same thing at that age... and although I've 'turned out alright' (relatively) it hasn't been a fucking picnic... Communication, honest communication, is the key, and that begins with patience and listening. Yeah, you have to listen to them spew the most vile, wrong headed, obscene, ignorant garbage that you have ever heard, but that is just the clearing process. If you do this, eventually they will trust you enough to actually open up their hearts a little and let you inside. The inside will be ugly, of course. Bear with it and do what you can. If you let them trust you, they will start to. That is the beginning of change.

Teachers need to do the same thing, however they need to do it on the wholesale level, and it is even harder. Don't look to the teachers to do this... they are over loaded as it is. We are part of an industrial society that has given the job of producing workers to the teachers, and then we don't give them the tools to do it. Frustrating.

By the way, the adolescent will trust his peers (who are in the same boat) before they will trust an adult. Be patient and firm. I had to be more of a rock with my kids, rather than a bull. It almost killed me, but it has paid off. I am friends with all three of my adult children. Actually, they are now my closest friends.

Well, that was my problem going through the public school system. I think in many cases like this that yes, poor teaching is to blame. Why is that? Many reasons but I think that low pay and crappy training are a couple of the main reasons.
