tisha2 wrote:yeah... interesting undercurrent to this discussion of: "yer avatar is hot, so of course people are hitting on you!" like, "well, she was wearing a short skirt, of course she wanted it!" (not attacking you, Rob... i thought yer post was very funny! - although if you want, i'd be happy to address it on yer conflict resolution thread... )

i *do* enjoy flirting and sexy banter with y'all that i have grown to know and love, and that is apparant all over this board.

i *did* recognize that i had the hot little klingon babe avatar (as a lil inside joke regarding bar shenanigans a few nights ago, not as an advertisement for 'tisha2, virtual slut').

i *did* change my avatar upon realizing this.

i *did* feel a little bit perturbed that i had to alter my 'image' to avoid harassment.

feminist rant aside, i think Rian and Sam both really hit on what i was getting at with this thread - that real-world social 'rules' apply here as well. when entering a new group, or meeting a new person, you either take it easy and gauge the situation before throwing yerself into it - IF you want it to go smoothly; or (if you aren't the type to care) you throw yerself in full-throttle and are either wholeheartedly welcomed, if yer full-throttle self happens to fit with that group, or you run the risk of being cooked and eaten and thrown out if it doesn't. in which case you probably don't care.

anyway thanks for the feedback, y'all.
wait wait..is that the end? without cowboyangel throwing his 3 cents in the ring?.

ok, for what it's worth. The only person here who I'm sure wouldn't mind the kind of attention being 'thrust' foward here is Kristy. But you know, she's got a brain and feelings and there is much about her that is very wise. I know because I've talked to her on the phone even! I do mention to people that I'm married and yes, I've had my ups and downs with that one but it seems to be sailing nicely now and yes I love to flirt too. I like to try to make personal contacts with some of you too. I've exchanged gifts with Joel, almost had DVD Burner over to my house, (he couldn't make it at the time) (now don't worry Joel about any implications there), I've had private emails with Tish and Bambi and been PM'd by a bunch of you and what seems to work is just being myself and shooting for honesty all the time. You , we all know what the creepazoid feeling is and for that I think we should have a sex advice thread with Rob and Rian as moderators ( why them? I donno). naw we all know how to deal with the creepazoid thing. But more importantly, this thread and the type of question it asks is where I'd like to see eplaya heading more in addition to what's already here. We are all friends after all ieven even this weird cyber way and occasionally we do meet. I'd love to see a day in the life type of thing here on the board...yes yes, I'll go to Kristy's ranch to cover that one. Ya but really. think about it sports fans and tisha2, I love you! And MONSTER KISSES ALL OVER YOU FOR THIS THREAD!!!!

If you like it, go with it

if not tell him to get lost.

But to answer your question, I can't see what is wrong with PM'ing someone. On the other hand PM'ing to try some overt pick up seems kind of lame, if not downright ridiculous.

blyslv wrote:There's plenty of estragen here as well. I asked, Tisha, my rather pointed question, because in the end you are the only person who knows how it feels, and what the proper response should be. We've all had bois and grrrrls hit on us. Sometimes it's flattering, sometimes it's annoying or scary. It is always intensely personal. So there is no right or wrong answer, just a lot of opinions.

I was on this board for about 6 months before I met anybody. I had read eli's words, as she had read mine, but we had never exchanged email until after we met in person. Then serious sparks flew and to make a short story shorter, we are now afianced.

How's that for a non sequitor?

For my own selfish reasons I think you should post the "offending" personal message here. It would be fun to see the person's technique, and public humiliation is always best when enjoyed as a vicarious thrill. I'm guessing you have some opinions. Tisha were you offended? Scared? Flattered?
i was offended. bothered that someone who didn't know me, had never interacted with me, sent me a trolly pm come-on. made me wonder what kind of impression i was making here, is what really bothered me. then i remembered that i'm allowed to be whoever the fuck i want to and that doesn't justify trolly come-ons.
i don't want to post it nor do i feel so onery today as to publicly squash him - i'm sure it was meant all in fun or whatever... fuck. i keep wanting to give the guy the benefit of the doubt and NOT post it and NOT publicly flame him. but i wonder if i'm being too nice...
fuck.

loved that avatar...dang it.

i had an avatar with a sword in it, and everyone seemed to think i was trying to pick a fight with them no matter what i said. it really does seem to color people's perception of you...the little picture...i guess that's all they have in some cases!

i have been pm'd by folks i didn't "know" but it hasn't been anything shady, and in these cases has turned into a nice chatty friendship type deal...but if someone was coming on hard in the personal message arena that would be kinda creepy.

i say flame em, but then they might like that :)

i'm gonna change my avatar to the sword one now, and see if anyone picks a fight!

CA - i am really liking the idea of a sex thread hosted by Rob and Rian... "Dear Rob and Rian, - "

Sam - no i will not.

GE - i don't know that one either.

Stuart - appreciate yer post. yer right. things do get a little warped as to subject matter, but rules of social interaction definitely apply, no?

blyslv - again, thanks fer the perspective. not gonna post it tho. left him an opening to salvage the situation - gotta wait and see if he takes it.

i keep relating interactions here to those at a party, or on the playa...

you wouldn't show up at someone's camp and start yelling at everyone and hitting on all the women and starting political fights before you've gotten a sense of the community, right? doesn't fly so well here, either.

started to write a longer explanation, but it does get sticky... anyway - i find that interactions here remind me of those at a party. if i'm not interested i don't stay. if i want to get to know someone, i say "hi" first and make a connection, i don't sneak up from behind and offer sexual favors; here i comment directly to someone in the bar or somewhere first, i don't pm them with offers right off the bat.

i'm sure some people wouldn't mind that, tho.

And I'm not sure I'd question Tish's courage. Trust Sensei on this one, it ain't a question of courage.

The thing is, I don't know why it would be offensive. I mean, a come-on is one person's way of saying, "hey I think you're something special and I'd like the chance to spend more time together" ... what's wrong with that?
