Moveable type and dictionaries have frozen the spelling of words, but their pronunciation has gone on changing (laughter, aspirin, Wednesday: think how you really say them as opposed to how they're spelled: laf/ter, as/prin, Wens/day) - French is even worst than English on this.

Though in the case of "aluminum," the moveable type helped cement its original misspelling and mispronunciation.

You misunderstand I was replying to your comment of ""Maths" sounds like someone has a speech impediment. Try putting that before the word "is" such as "maths is hard". It sounds like Kaa the Python is talking." by saying that "maths" sounds completely normal to me. Seriously, calm down dude. Maths is RIGHT in more places than math is. Learn to live with it.

They are fun, American Boyfriend and I play fight over word pronunciations all the time. We've had entire Skype conversations that pretty much just involve us saying words back and forth in our own accents while trying to keep a straight face. After a few rounds of ban-air-na/ban-ah-na they both sounds silly.

Of course people in their own dialects are going to understand each other. It's like how every single village in China has a different dialect, and yet inter-communications between villages is extremely difficult, causing the PRC to push for a single spoken language. Now imagine the horror of having subversive babble-words such as "maths" introduced that make the populace sound like they have lisps? Cleansing this foul language saboteur is why I support the Directorate on Opposing Unamerican Corrupt and Heretical English. I hope it will stem the tide of word-noise, at least in the States, lest we fall down a slippery slope, allowing words like "sheeple," "nemaste," or the abuse of "synergy" to infest this language for all eternity.

No, because a base-10 measurement system sucks. At least a foot has 12 sub-units. The number 12 is a "superior highly composite number" giving it many useful factors. What do we get with base 10? Numbers 2 and 5. Try dividing 10 by 4 and you're already adding decimal places. In US customary units, even when breaking down an inch, it's often done in fractions. The "mile" sucks, but we can blame Europe for having a zillion different "miles" to choose from. If we're going to change things up though, we ought to be using the Babylonian base-60 system. The Babylonians really had a head on their shoulders. The number 60 divides into so many different whole numbers that it makes it very useful. This is evidenced in our continued use of a base-60 system in hours and minutes, degrees on a circle, etc. Can you imagine how much it'd suck to have a metric time system? Good thing those French didn't push that!

All that inconsistency and variety of measurement -- diversity which you appear to love -- was the problem-reason why the metric system was so important to Europeans. It wasn't because it was an absolutely amazing system, but because it was simply "metric" -- a standard, some standard. Warring nations in Europe literally provided escorts to envoys of the enemy who carried the metric standard across their lands. See, they understood the need for now allowing ruinous anomalies such as "maths" to undermine whole nations. Across the ocean, the US didn't have such problems. One nation indivisible. We already standardized (where it mattered) and define our own standards. So shall we continue by ridding the planet of this "maths" evil.

But that's because you're a hippie and would be content to sow weeds (or just weed?) into your garden for no other reason than "diversity" or "fun." But let's get back to reality here. You don't create a healthy crop by allowing every last plant to infest your land. You ensure that harmful plants are removed and the healthy, productive plants survive. In this case, the invasive, noxious weed is the non-word "maths." The zebra mussel on the ship of English. It has spread like a malignant cancer, harming once-prosperous English speaking countries. It must be stopped.

Look at what happened to the British Empire after the use of "maths" systematically destroyed the ability to communicate with members of the commonwealth. Look at all the "G'day mate" babble that goes on in Australia, caused by its tolerance for speech impediment words such as "maths". Canada has fared somewhat better because of its proximity to the US, but still suffers Quebec. The surviving bastion of lingual sanity is the United States of America (and perhaps parts of its northern hat), and it is our obligation to fight this word-enemy in all lands, at the very least to protect our own language and values, but also to save English-speaking humanity itself -- a noble pursuit given the number of people who speak this language.

I would go as far as to support the eradication of all words ending in "th" being made plural by the addition of "s" when not pronounced like "z".

Well shit... there's that "We believe these truths to be self evident" crap in the Declaration Of Independence...
