There's an epic flamewar going on the NYC BM email list right now. Israel vs Palestine.

Someone just dropped the Nazi bomb, so I assume it's going to shut down soon. But it's been entertaining. I just read the first and last sentences to get the flavor, but it basically started with Midburn and it has just absolutely cratered.

Now if only Simon and his socks could make the leap from Rochester to NYC, we could really get this going.

i am staying WAY THE FUCK OUT of that tar baby...

you couldn't PAY me to comment on the nonsense flying back and forth. and yes, i do read it.

and besides, i'm 360 fucking miles from NYC, it might as well be a thousand....personally, i cant stand the place, and i resent the immediate reaction of the entire country when i say im from New York....IM FROM WESTERN NEW YORK, and i dont give a shit about the "City"...
Taking the hony stance, huh?

Too funny, I'm closer to NYC (100 miles away) and I'm two states away in Delaware. People just don't understand geography!

Sounds like the Black Rock Beacon. We had 165 lbs of bacon to start the week, and had bacon available 24/7. We ended up with 5 lbs. I brought 21 lbs, and Sir Francis Bacon and his wife ali baba brought another 22. Five pounds is the MINIMUM along with the camp fee.

Rock and roll is right.

Whew... it's been a busy morning. Up early and internet nonsense, then off to my local workshop place with Pandorra's new 3D printer to meet with one of their programming wizards. The printer was working and everything, but for some reason or another it was having trouble with networking and wifi (in addition to plugging in with USB, it's supposed to work wirelessly). We'd spent hours trying to work through the issues yesterday, but when he realized we were local we agreed in person would probably be easier. It sure was, and he's a helluva nice guy and longtime burner. Hooray for being able to get everything taken care of for Pandorra, make a new friend, and swap playa stories.

A few errands later, I got back home, got the printer set back up, and finished just about everything I needed to for our studio network (moving a base station, run some wires, etc). I've got more cleaning, moving, and rewiring of stuff to do this afternoon along with a few other projects, woohoo for slow and steady progress.

Yggy, we are very happy to hear that your earth-moving machine did not roll over on you, sheesh. I do not even want to imagine how long it would have taken to wrestle your remains from that mountain. :|

Aserentidipity, so sorry for your loss, but isn't it wonderful how people rise up under tragedy.

I am going to have to figure a way to lure mgb327 and his 125 pounds of applewood-smoked bacon to Barbie Death Camp. :?

I've rolled a machine… that's why they have cages. Just stay in and you're supposedly fine, although I broke Rule Number One and bailed out… because I was also breaking Rule Number Whatever and didn't have the seatbelt on. Pull it back up, make sure the oil didn't leak out, and keep going!
I suppose Rule Number Two is if you do bail out, Don't bail the same direction the machine is rolling! I did not break that rule, so here I still am.

Uh, Safety third 23rd??

Glad that everyone is safe.

Hate is a nasty beast. Helps nothing and and just burns energy. A cold blue flame that consumes and destroys. I see it this way: every group has its small percentage of assholes. That does not mean that the whole group are assholes - just that select, special few.

I am a RCMP kid, I grew up around cops. Last week 3 RCMP were murdered and 2 were shot by some nutjob in eastern Canada. I still cannot convey how this has affected me. They were were parents, responsible good people who were just doing their job. Fuck, FUCK!! This happened 1000's of kilometers from me, and I did not know the RCMP members or their families - but if feels like I have lost family.

So, do you believe that the adjectives people give themselves are accurate? Does it very by adjective or kinds of adjective?

I find it hard to believe when people call themselves "chill." I'm not quite sure what it means, but the sense I have of it is, easy going, easy to be with, possible light drug connotations... And I think that people have no perspective on whether or not they are "chill"... If someone says that about someone they know, preferably someone not within earshot, then it seems possible, but I just can't believe in it when it comes from the person themselves. I think that's where we have a lot of self-delusion...

You just need to chillax.

And yes that's an official English word, added to the Oxford English Dictionary.

The only reason people describe themselves at all is to give themselves a sense of security and avoid existential dread.

Ah, the OED won't load for me. Alas...

Poking around at the definitions, I think it's partly that it comes from a subculture that I'm not part of, and yes, one that makes me uncomfortable, and even scares me a little. And does the same to "normals" and in those out-groups there tends to develop a language that protects them, that serves as a code, that makes conversation somewhat impenetrable to outsiders. When hippies start using it, it gets more confusing for me.

existential dread is the spice of life! delve deep, go dark! ride that coaster, it goes way up and way down!

Here's my theory on the chill epidemic: people think they need to sell their company at all times. "Why other people like my company" chill, meaning, in my guess, no negative,or friction causing behaviors.

This is a facet of a culture where being alone is rarely seen as a good thing.

I always have somewhere else I can be (alone) if I don't like the company I find myself in. If I get prickly or abrasive, and I withdraw, I can be fine on my own, and come back with an apology. If a person cannot be comfortable by themselves, (and we are going to be in a land with no cell-phone passifiers) they need to spread the news that they are easy to get along with all the time. or, in other words: chill. The narrower the definition of chill, or the expansion of what is not chill, not acceptable, the more exclusive the company will need to be.

it's just a theory.

I've forgotten the name of the organization, but Scott was honored as a medic who lost his life in a ceremony a few years back. It was, of course, more medic and fire-fighters than police (although all are first responders), but I think the sense of brotherhood is much the same.

"Chill"- hmmmm......

"chill out".....what happens when the Yellowstone supervolcano decides to fully erupt. That scenario is nasty, because it'll be about 10 times as bad as what happened after Tambora's eruption in 1816. Krakatoa was a drop in the bucket by comparison.

The last time the Yellowstone hot spot decided to really erupt big time was back when the hot spot was under Idaho. Scientists have found the result in Nebraska, at a place called Ashfall Fossil Beds. Seems that the rhinos (genera Teleoceras)died of hypertrophic pulmonary osteodystrophy. That's what happens when Every single skeleton has the pathologic growths on its bones that modern animals exhibit if they die of lung failure caused by oxygen deprivation. Take your pick. Die of volcanic dust inhalation, freezing, or getting buried.

It ain't a good thing in any case.

Kindofa awkward shift in conversation, but let's discuss someone who is definitely not a hero. How low will my street cred go when I finally make the move to grovel for tiks on epaya? While I might not be able to face myself after the plunge, there's the chance I might run into one of y'all. Though, I suppose, it's like the old joke, "respect you in the morning? hell, I don't even respect you now." Anyway, I'm gearing up to show all these spiritual doofuses what shameless begging is all about. Beautiful day out, going to enjoy it, but tonight I'll fill the glass and show you cats just what I'm not made off.

Yeah, a few years back I would run joke posts on craigslist first person/dog, using the dog as a foil looking for BM ticks or asking dog advice, and inevitably get a couple responses telling me that dogs are not allowed at Burning Man.

I just got home from a day trying to peddle my foster dogs off on forever homes, blah blah woof woof. It was a real nice day. Talked to all kinds of bright-eyed people, saw the best in humanity and dog-dom. Managed to get some friends to go to the Ethnic Dance Festival in SF later this week, which is high art, my friends. Home now, and the dogs are chewing bones. Drinking the first one, gearing up to strain at the leash myself, beg, roll over and grovel. First, let me check my email to see if my STEP came thru...
