I paid 23 cents a gallon at the station in Goleta outside of UCSB. Busch beer was $1.19 per six pack, Bud was $1.25 and Michelob was $1.32. We drank Busch because we didn't want to spend a full penny a can more for Bud! Back then a penny was actually worth something.

There were only 13 TV channels
Broadcasting wasn't 24 hours...

The warm glow of an Atwater Kent radio. It would keep your hot chocolate warm if you sat it on the lid while listening to Big Bands on Sunday nights in your feetie-jams.

8-track cassette players, and the battle between the "hippies" and the audiophiles who loved reel-to-reel.

Betamax, and the death thereof at the hands of an inferior standard (VHS)

I was in Japan when the betamax/VHS war was on. The NEX carried top of the line machines not available in the US. I had the VHS with the big primary color buttons, and a laserdisc player. Even had a CED, which was a video player which used a needle. Yep, a needle. Still have the laserdisc player.

I remember my Dad buying a new home stereo system just after CD players came out, the CD bit was still seperate from everything else. For ages the only CD we actually had was just a bunch of sound effects, no music, that we'd play super loud. My favourite was the smashing glass

...states had only one color combination on their license plates

This is the earliest combination I remember for California plates. We had a 1963 T-Bird with this combination. The number was HBB785

Panty hose had not become prevalent. Girls still wore garter belts with their stockings, but skirts were getting shorter. Class change on the stairs in school was a teenage boy's dream.

We chatted on CB radios because there was no Internet and cell phones.
I remember my mom being so thrilled and amazed because I called to let her know where I was and what I was doing one evening, from my bike. I had a portable CB and a friend on a base station patched me through his phone line.
She later told that story many times

Short funny story - 15 years ago I was sent in a crane truck full of masonry rock to the Pacific NW San Juan Islands, with no better instructions than "drive off the ferry and up the road and the guy will wave you down".
It took FOREVER to find that guy - everyone waves at everyone up there!! I met about half the people on the island that day.

I did have a friend at the BRCPO named General Purpose, in the early 2000s, that I'm so old I can remember.

God Damn Sonvabitch was about explicit as it got.
The next morning you will wake up pretty much your old self except that a very unusual 16 hours will have been added to your store of life experience.
