Free Playa Compass GPS Android App

Post by PocoJoe » Thu Jun 26, 2014 11:06 am

Hi-

If anyone is going to be on Playa and would be willing to take their Android phone along, I would appreciate your giving the Android App I have posted on Google Play a try. It is a free, open source app called PlayaCompass, and is preloaded with this year's golden spike location and the coordinates of the trash fence etc. It also has traceback for finding where you left your bike (but if you can't find it on an emply playa, I'm not sure this app is going to help!) If you want to see where the man is going to be, the temple, center camp etc, please give it a try and let me know how it works for you. I'd appreciate hearing back about how it works for you.

Thanks in advance!

Great concept.
I appreciate that the App has only ONE permission- location.
Just sent it to my tablet. Will evaluate tonight.

Any thoughts about doing an iOS version?

Dreamy wish list item would be the ability to add multiple locations and notes... (I spend an appreciable time outside the trashfence, and the ability to put markers like "BIG DUNE" or "CEMENT THINGY" or "DEAD ANTELOPE" on a GPS map would be RAAAAAAAD).

great concept! I have not downloaded it yet, but looked at website. Can the angle be toggled from degrees to clock hand position, such as navigating from a location back to 3:30 / esplanade? Also is it capable of uploading the art placement list such as:
Bitchen Art Grant Project #3 at 12:45 / 3200 (clock hand and radius)
Alien Siege Machine 8:50 / 2000
etc.
Is 4 shots enuff? no foo-foo drinks; just naked Espresso

Hi Nipple,

The source is in Processing, a Java development environment, that has not been ported to iOS. If someone wants to fork it over to iOS, the source is on github.
I will be working on storing locations and notes in the next two weeks. Two reaons - one, would like to make notes about things i saw and want to ask about, and two, to facilitate a self-guided art tour. It is a tradeoff; to store waypoints requires increasing permissions to store information on the device. Right now the only permission is coarse and fine location.

Thanks for the nice words

Hi EspressoDude,

Thanks for all the shots through the years!
Love the Hellfire website. Thanks.

Yes, if you tap the bottom button on the display you toggle from angles in degrees from 12:00 to clock hours.
If you are in the general camping area it figures out what your radial distance is from the man and converts into the block you are in (A-B block, as in the block between A and B). I know the blocks are named somehow but I am always off by one and find the interval description (between A and B) easier when playabrained.
