Check out my sweet playa bed

Last year my wife and I had a 6' stretch hexayurt and an air mattress on the ground. Overall it was great, we had space but it really wasn't enough. By Tuesday morning the inside of the yurt turned into a pile of clothes and dry food on one side and a queen air mattress on the other.

I wanted to lift the mattress off the ground for underneath storage without bringing a metal bed frame or something stupid, also I like to sit on the side of a bed when I'm getting ready or putting shoes on or shit like that, not on the ground (high maintenance). Those cool double camping cots are $$$$ and probably wouldn't be tall enough to fit our gear underneath, I came up with this solution for 40$ and some scrap decking I had laying around.

We've already done a test run, the entire thing only took me 25 minutes to set up, which is just drilling on the legs. It survived the weekend, survived drunken tent sex too.

Step 1: pick up a bunch of wood


The cheapest wood I could find was this 6 inch fence board, I picked up some 1x2 strips for the spots in between the fence slats, hoping I won't need the middle rail


Test fitting my frame, definitely going to need a 3rd middle rail


3rd frame rail installed, hinges installed, frame sliced in half


A queen bed is 60"x80" and i needed this to fit cleanly on my 4x8 utility trailer


Slats installed, square headed screws are necessary


Folds nicely


The middle rail fucked up my wood calculations and didn't have enough for legs, i had 3 2x4 scraps so I made a 4th out of some old trex decking I found on the side of my house


Our bins will fit with room to spare


I decided to go with the decking for all the legs because the price was right and its super easy to cut, downside is that its heavy


I wanted more connection points and didn't want to make a V shaped leg so i came up with this thing


hopefully should act as a lip, and extra contact points for the frame


finished leg, pretty awesome


like a glove


7 legs in total, the middle hinges are cheap as hell, didn't trust them at all


Had to throw the mattress on it and roll around a bit, it passed my stress test.


total mattress height, not sure what a "normal" bed height is but this is kinda high but not bad at all

It looks great - I'm just wondering if the center legs could be set up differently. There's space for another bin under there, and it's blocked by those supports (okay, I'm a packing junkie). Possibly a row of support on either side, next to where the existing bins sit? Problem is that I'm not sure how much that would effect the stability at the hinge area of the bed. Of course, you could just put bins you don't need to access much in that area and not worry about it.

...and, now I'm overthinking...

With 2 four foot 2x4s you could splint the middle buy drilling 4 holes on each side and run some bolts though, then use wing nuts for easy install.

That would eliminate the need for the center legs.

Well... it was next to a lake, not on top of an ancient lake bed. Close as I can get at the moment.

I like that Idea, I could potentially do bolts and wing nuts on all 4 corners too and leave my drill at home. hrmmmm might have to think about that.

Also I have no clue how much it weighs, if i had to guess I'd say 45lbs plus or minus 10 pounds. I'm able to lift it above my head (folded), and I put it on top of my jeep and up in the rafters of my garage alone. If that helps at all.

The criteria for structural integrity here is the same as it is for all playa structures;
To really be sure that it will stand up to the extreme conditions found on the playa, you need to have it set up on top of a car going down the highway.

Nice! I had one of those way back in the day. It was my first "real" dirtbike. Thing was a frikken blast to ride.

Yea I spent 40 bucks and some change, I already had the material for the legs however.

SWEET. If I thought I could make one of these and fit it on top of my crappy Kia Sportage I'd totally follow in your footsteps. We've got folding camp cots we picked up on craigslist, which rock my socks but you TOTALLY win for the DIY & the underneath storage...

I didn't know there was a competition!

Mine doesn't have ANY legs, has room underneath for storage, and folds up to 1" thick against the wall!!!

Alright Figjam, center legs are gone.

I went with 2 foot sections of 2x4 on each hinge with 1/2" bolts sandwiching it all together. I also went with bolts on the corner legs too, went from 30 wood screws to attach the legs to 14 bolts.
