Those were the good ol' days.

There was nothing that you were going to contract that a quick jab of penicillin or a light dusting of DDT would not cure.

When 4 ounces of Welch's Grape Juice was a big treat and very satisfying.

We were at a state park this weekend and while waiting at the visitors center we saw a strange thing attached to the wall. That's when I realized my kids had never seen or used a pay phone.

I remember always having coins in my pocket so I could call my parents to come pick me up from the movies.

I remember when, if we were thirsty, we'd drink water from a garden hose as opposed to a plastic bottle.
I think garden hose water tasted better than water from the kitchen sink faucet. Perhaps the synthetic chemicals leached out of the hose in the sun and gave the hose water a better taste.

It's got that light vinyl off-gassing flavor.

But we had to remember to let the water run a moment to cool down and to push out the slugs, crickets or other critters that crawled into the hose.

I remember when you got a DJ only if you didn't have enough money to hire real musicians.
I remember you were a DJ if you didn't have the talent to be a musician.
I remember when the Burn was marketed as not a rave.
I remember when a theme camp was something you created and were part of, you didn't join.
I remember when weddings and honeymoons were a celebration unto themselves, without the need of a massive festival to make it special.
I remember when people went to Reno to get married.
I remember trying to tune in those scrambled images on late night TV at the dawn of digital.
I remember playing with matches.
I remember hacking billboards with spray paint and stencils.
I remember changing entire sentence structures to avoid using a word I might miss-spell, before spell-check.
I remember when 7-Eleven opened at 7am and closed at 11pm.
I remember touching gross things and not using hand sanitizer...and surviving.
I remember camping on L and having a unimpeded view of the open playa all week.
I remember when the org didn't add additional streets to the outer ring during the week.
I remember when douches were considered a hygiene product.
I remember when if my computer crashed like it just did, none of this collected wisdom would have been saved for the ages.

I remember a warmer sun, a sweeter breeze, a kinder day.

Our yard water is not culinary water, it is secondary water from the reservoir. Only on from April to October. You have to be careful, it is treated a little, but by no means safe to drink on a regular basis. Sometimes it even gets teensy fishies in it which can clog the sprinkler heads.

I remember...

Water Wiggles!
Metal roller skate that attached to your shoes and had a key to tighten them up.
Coronet Five and Dime stores
When KFC was really good!
Roller Derby and the Thunderbirds
Demolition Derby on TV
watch JFK's funeral procession and his casket working it's way to the White House
Clutch Cargo Cartoons
Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

I remember being excited about Evel Kenevel's latest stunt.
We all rode stripped-down Schwinn Stingrays, usually painted flat black. If you didn't have a Schwinn you at least used a Schwinn handlebar stem ("gooseneck") and front fork because the others would fail when you did jumps.
For your "street" bike, a 20" with a 3 speed hub or 5 speed derailleur, banana seat, full chrome fenders, and ape-hanger handlebars was the shit. There was no such thing as a "mountain" bike.

When movie theaters were HUGE!

I lived in a small suburb of Pittsburgh, Mt. Lebanon, and the movie theater had 16 (or 32) cartoons on Saturday morning.
Tossing flattened popcorn boxes at the screen would make the manager stop the cartoons and threaten us.
I doubt one kid in that theater had his parents drive him/her there. Bikes and the trolley was how we got around in grade school.

I found this pic of the inside and entrance of the Denis Theater. A Foundation recently bought it and has $1mil so far.
