Welcome back Elliot!
The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.

Elliot I am so impressed with how upfront you're being with what's going on, it sucks how stigmatised mental illness is, I know I struggle with people knowing about my crazy but it shouldn't be something we feel like we have to hide, that just makes it worse. Good on you for taking charge and getting help, that's really wonderful. Best of luck with your next stay and I'll have a big congratulatory hug waiting for you when we meet on playa :)

Now THAT's sustainable. Unlike the Chinese, who are slated to run out of bamboo in 10 years or less. According to their own media the primary cause for an insufficient supply of bamboo is chopsticks. They have now started to convince the people that stainless steel chopsticks and plastic chopsticks are the way to go, but they prefer bamboo.

Actually, bamboo returns quickly and robustly, it is their, and our, forests which are going into the trash.

http://money.cnn.com/2011/12/02/smallbu ... hopsticks/

In Japan, plastic or lacquer chopsticks are used at home, but eat out, which many Japanese do daily, and the chopsticks go right in the trash. Big cooking chopsticks tend to be bamboo, and are reused. I still have mine from the hundred yen shop, nearing 20 years old now. Pretty sure bamboo is more difficult to work with than word for mass production of chopsticks.

We had big bamboo growing in our yard in Yokosuka. Every spring, Larry would dig up the new shoots and share them with the neighbors, who would in turn bring us portions of the tasty dishes they made. And each spring he had to crawl under the house to be sure no bamboo was going to force the floor up. Larry cut bamboo every year for the fence, and whenever we needed any sort of pole. Great stuff, I miss having it.

AntiM, I am SO glad you put in your observations around here. You just taught me something that I didn't know, and I think that it's great that America (or at least Americus) controls the chopstick market that's emerging. I've tried growing river cane here, and it tends to be great for getting rid of wet spots, but you're right, it's INVASIVE. The only thing it competes with in Missouri is johnsongrass. Johnsongrass is like Bermuda grass on steroids in bottomlands and crowds out the corn.

Speaking of which, Western nebraska is getting hit with a hell of a drought, while the Missouri corn growers look to have a bumper crop this year. We'll need it because of the ethanol demand added to the feedstock demand.

Back to bamboo - - bamboo shoots are a must in Chinese cooking as well as Japanese cooking. I add them to my kung po chicken along with the peanuts and kung po sauce and celery. (I picked up some new recipes for Chinese cooking this year, and will be wokking on the playa as well.

Less and less today you see bamboo scaffolds in downtown Beijing. High rise apartments get higher and higher, and you need steel scaffolds. But still there are some workers who insist on using bamboo scaffolding.

I had one other thing to remark on - - -

welcome back Elliott!!

Most people don't realize that bamboo is a grass, and that's why it propagates so fast. 8)

Welcome back Elliot!
I have some depressive tendencies too and sure it can suck sometimes.
Figuring out how to take care of myself was a major victory and now I at least have a few things I can do.

As if I didn't want to meet you before, now I'm determined.
Hang in there old man!

Yeah... stigma, schmigma. Severe depression can be just as debilitating as a bunch of broken bones, and to me there is not much difference. Pain in the bones or pain in the mind; they can both make you scream just as loud.

Now... if the broken bones are the result of some preposterously stupid act, then that would be embarrassing. But this Major Depressive Disorder is something I inherited from my mother. Or, I should say, to be more precise... I inherited a strong predisposition for this illness, and somehow I wound up with a severe case. So.. I did not do anything preposterously stupid to wind up with this, so why would I feel embarrassed? Thus... no basis for stigma.

I have now read the Bar pages I missed, and I see that I owe a big apology for "disappearing". And I have no idea how Figjam learned I was in hospital! I only told one soul, and he is not on ePlaya. Not that it matters. But I am very grateful for all the good wishes.
Yes, I have been fighting this for much of my life, and June 17(I think it was) I went to my regular mental health nurse and begged for more serious treatment -- tears and snot pouring out of my face. She sent me to the local hospital, and they sent me to the psychiatric hospital in Santa Rosa. Finally! The doctor there put me on entirely different medications, and so on and so forth. The jury is still out, of course, but ... ... enough about me.

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!

Elliot - Not to turn this into a support group, but, well.... support groups have always done me a world of good, so fuck it! I also suffer from major bouts with depression. I'm a very shy and anti-social person, thank god for alcohol (wait maybe that's another chronic problem). I can be very manic depressive and I have a daughter who has been diagnosed as bi-polar (and a cutter) who struggles as a young adult.

It's a tough road to haul. I haven't had the depressive spells for quite some time and I can thank a number of people (including YOU) for making me feel "okay" and someone of value. I think those of us who suffer from depression, suffer from depression that manifests itself differently for each of us. I don't know what your depression stems from, but know there are a whole lot of fuckin' people who look up to you. I am one of those people who finds you absolutely amazing.

Personally, you are going to be one of those people who I will always look up to as someone who made my transition from birgin to burner a tremendously valuable transition. Thank god for people like you!!!

We love you man!!!

Aww these recent posts make me want to hug you all!

Since we're sharing, I had a pretty major bout of depression hit while in the gate queue last year. It was triggered by my first visit to a porto. I was so not ready for that, all the portaloos I'd ever seen before were the fancy chemical flush kind. Hello OCD germ freak out and panic attack! By wednesday night I was taken to Reno against my will in handcuffs to get the worst care imaginable. The whole experience of being "helped" was actually the worst part of the whole thing but I got through it, made it back to the playa by Thursday night and managed to have an amazing time. Burning Man was the wakeup call I desperately needed to get help and sort my life out so once I was back in Australia I went about finding a therapist to work with. I was pretty excited at my first appointment when she turned out to be sporting a purple mo-hawk and a )*( tattoo on her foot. She's super fantastic and has helped me a lot. :)

First off, WELCOME HOME, Elliot. So good to know that you have things under control and are getting the help you need. You are truly an inspiration.

Yesterday morning our cat, Alley, began looking weak and as the day wore on lost his ability to walk. He lie at the foot of our bed last night and this morning when I woke up, was no longer among us. We had him for about 8 years and he was about 9 years old. One never seems to "own" a cat, but these warm and living creatures are nourishing to touch. He mostly lived out doors, but was equally comfortable indoors as well. I miss him already. I plan to bury him in the garden this afternoon. Kinda sad right now with a tear in my eve
