46 days to go until I hit the road!

Post by jneilvindy » Mon Jul 07, 2014 7:52 am

*hopes the road doesn't hit back*

First timer, wanted to do this for the last 5 years but you know.... life.

Then some terrible things ushered in their usual terrible changes as they so often do, but life goes on in new and strange ways and well; now at last it's time to burn.

I've read every guide, watched every video, lurked every forum my interwebz skills can track down and I have 10 years of every single weekend spent camping as well going for me.

I only have 2 questions...

1. Once I arrive at burning man who do I talk to concerning my room? Also, is there nightly turn down service or will I be "roughing it" and
have to turn down my own bed of an evening?
2. For the meetngreet: jello shots or little crackers with stuff on them?

You can get turned down anywhere on the playa.

Most M&G offerings are a lot more ambitious than that!

Well I want to get turned down by the best!
Clearly you've never had one of my jello shots! (although, jello, alcohol, what's so fantastic I ask)

I'm doing this wrong. I just visited page 2 and I've failed already!

Do-over?

The universe told me to come this year. Can I just get a ticket at the gate? I'm bringing 10 pounds of slim jims, a bottle of gatorade and 7 shirts for daily shirtcockingwear.... anything else really needed? The playa will provide right? Can I get a DJ listing for all the sound camps? I don't wanna miss a hot set by an awesome ARTIST throwing down the sounds! I have a cute bum! I don't really need to bring a bike right? They are just laying around for use I've been told.

Can you make those jello shots vegan? Boil down some sort of tree or okra or something?

Magic 8-ball says Yes!

Vegan Adults-Only Jello Shots
Ingredients:
◦2 tablespoons agar agar
◦8 ounces 100 percent fruit juice
◦3 tablespoons sugar (to taste depending on the juice)
◦6 ounces vodka
Directions:
1.In a medium saucepan over high heat, whisk together agar agar, juice, and sugar, and bring to a boil.
2.Cool slightly. Vigorously stir in vodka.
3.Pour mixture into small cups. Refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight. Serve chilled.

If your cute bum glows neon red, you DON'T need a bike light.

I vote you bring jello shots, Vegan if it's easy enough, but don't worry about it if you go classic. I'm known Vegans who succumbed to bacon on the playa.

Shade structures and shirtcocking are supposed to prevent that very thing I thought....

Perhaps straight up shots of a smooth 16+ year old single malt would stand in as a decent replacement for those wishing to remain vegan pure!

Everything I've read leads me to believe bacon on the playa is some kind of mystical bacon; you know, sprinkled with sparkle ponie tears and unicorn glitter or somesuch witchery!

Shelf-stable pre-cooked bacon is a lie.

Seriously though, for the potluck dinner I can bring a vegan version as well if anyone would prefer it.

I'll bring around 6 quarts of dirty rice with sausage and can easily fix up 2 of the quarts to be meatless if there is a demand.

If everyone is a carnivour then I wont bother with the vegan version!

There are lots of weird food people at burningman. I just bring something I would like myself and don't worry about it. Though it is nice of you too offer.

Welcome, I believe you have figured us out.

Things are just so different here in Indiana. At least the groups I hang around with. I've been doing potluck dinners for 10 years now and never once has there been a request for vegan anything.

Around here if you show up with a vegan dish you'd be looked at like you just landed from Mars!

There are even non-vegan holdouts here in Cali. At my house, my two gigantic sons have often said that they would eat anything as long as it once had a face.

Oh! And welcome….TK is right, I think you have us figured out.

Okay. You will run into vegans. They may or may not identify themselves, depending on the situation.

But my mention was a joke. There are loads of ungracious vegans, who will loudly chastise people who do not share their dietary preferences and even go into full lecture mode when offered something with meat in it rather than just saying "no, thank you." Do not stress about the vegans. The bunnies? the bunnies are fucking dangerous, but the vegans are pussy cats.

Tamarakay is right--bring something you yourself would eat. That's what the vegans and vegetarians would do. If there might be confusion, tape a card to the edge of the container that says what it is.

I think dirty rice with sausage sounds wonderful.

I'm vegetarian (not vegan), and I just ask before trying anything. I usually eat before I head over so I don't have to worry about it - cook what you want & don't worry about it. Anyone who wants something vegan or veggie can bring it. If I could figure out how to keep my chili non-carne safe from my camp mates I'd bring that - sadly it wouldn't survive until Weds night in my camp.

Yep me too. If there's nothing I can eat except what I bring, no biggie. Booze is usually vegetarian, so I just end up getting drunker.
