What are you gonna eat this year?

Post by tahiti_treat » Fri Jul 11, 2014 8:20 am

I'm hungry and curious what everyone is planing for their playa meals.

Here's what I have planned so far for this year:
Thai coconut curry and rice
Burritos (breakfast and regular)
Veggie Chili (I love doing chili close to the end - you can throw all your leftovers in!)
Quinoa with beans, corn and veggies
Tasty Bites
One-pot pasta (water is measured out and you throw all the sauce ingredients and pasta in with it and cook it all together - no grey water!)

Instant oatmeal and coffee in the morning
PBJ sandwich and Gator Aid for lunch
Mountain House Meal and coffee for dinner
During the day - lots of water, bacon jerky and trail mix.
Very basic but works for me.
Oh yeah - a cold beer every once in a while :D
You know it's going to be a bad day when you jump out of bed and miss the floor.

I am lucky to have a small travel trailer with fridge and two burner stove...

Breakfast:
Cereal with fruit
Sausage and egg sandwiches
breakfast burritos
Oatmeal

Lunch-free style from food I have in the trailer

Supper:
Goulash
Steaks with baked potato
Pinto Beans and ham hocks with cornbread
Cheeseburgers

(All hot items are pre-cooked In vacuum sealed boiling bags-just fire up the boiling pot with a few inches of water and throw them in-I recycle the cooking water)

Over-rated. I suggest pickles instead.

I'll be eating a breakfast burrito every morning (main meal)
Chips & salsa, pickles, trail mix, nuts and snacks throughout the day
A light soup for dinner (usually Trader Joes French onion, garlic, or mushroom)

Moar snacks.

That's about it.

I think I wind up eating better on the playa than I do in Defaultia.

My girlfriend and I pre-cook and vac-seal a few different meals (our target is that anything to be eaten on the playa needs to be ready to serve within 10-15 minutes), plus we bring out our own personal favorites and staples. I also pre-cook enough fried potatoes to be able to have 'em every morning as well as share with campmates (carbo-loading, since our bodies need fuel on the playa). For me, favorite staples means burgers and dogs, and last year I discovered the notion of buying a pound or two of pulled pork or BBQ from a favorite bay area food truck (heap them with praise, ask nice, and give them a few days' lead time in case they can't hook you up on the spot). I bring plenty of bacon - over the years it's varied between the pre-cooked hormel stuff sold by my friendly neighborhood apocalypse-class warehouse joint and someplace fancy that my gf and I want to get from (I pre-cook that to 80% at home, to keep the playa prep and mess to a minimum).

Beyond that, it's a treasure-trove of special dishes and share-able treats. Not just things we might share with campmates, but what they may share with us. We don't do a big camp meal plan or anything, but everyone has something they're excited about and wants to bring some to share or offer when they're making it. That, and as I explore Black Rock City, I find the most amazing culinary delights. People who are passionate enough about something that they want to share it with friends and strangers.

I like having basics on hand, because if for any reason I start feeling out of sorts, basics and comfort food will get me through it. That, and they prove to be easy to share extras with campmates or neighbors, especially towards the end of the week (if someone hasn't been eating right for a few days, a regular burger suddenly become the best burger they've ever had in their entire life hehe).

Since I live on a semi-self sufficient farm, I am a firm believer in pre-cooking, vacuum sealing and freezing a wide varied of vegetables and meat products - except eggplant which does not freeze well.

Besides a wide selection of various foods that I will be bringing from the freezers, I will be bringing two things which I do not normally keep in my freezers - frozen and vacuum packed (1) Biscuits with scrambled eggs and venison sausage patties and (2) Grilled cheese sandwiches with wild hog bacon cured in the smoke house .

Oh no! I just froze 3 gallons of eggplant.
I know it will be mushy - but still ok for curry?

If you do not mind your eggplant being a bit mushy, it will do nicely. It will be very eatable, just not very firm.

I like to fry eggplant. Once it is frozen, it will not maintain its body.

As you peel/slice the eggplant, you might wish to add it to water that has a lemon juice added. The lemon juice will prevent the eggplant from oxidizing (turning brown) while you are peeling/slicing the remainder.

I wish I could pre-cook and freeze everything. If I lived closer, or could bring out a freezer, I would totally do that.

I tend to lose my taste for sweets out there, but I'm thinking about trying pancakes this year, too.

I am bringing my frozen food on a 4-1/2 day drive from Mississippi an ice chest packed with dry ice and topping off with more dry ice in Fernley.

3 pounds of home made beef jerky so far. That should be enough protein and electrolytes for the week. Now I need to work on breakfasts.

Update: I discovered this at the local Korean food place: http://www.house-foods.com/product/Curr ... with+Beef/

I had it for dinner tonight, it's pretty good (to me)! Not at all spicy, yet a little more interesting tasting that straight-up beef stew. Had it with a package of heat-in-the-bag rice, but I think it'll be even better with couscous.

I'm on a mission to *not* get to the "I would commit innumerable sins for a hamburger" stage by Friday or Saturday this year (though I'm sure there are camps that would help me with that ;) ) I'm trying for a multi-pronged approach for that--multivitamins, dinner with my partner every evening, bringing a good variety of protein-y foods (both those that require cooking and those that don't). Any tips on that are welcome, though!

I found this jam recipe online , going to try it this weekend to see if it is any good

Bacon Jam

Bacon jam is an amazing savory AND sweet onion garlic spread that is, we need to repeat, amazing.
In a slow cooker, combine 1/2 cup of cider vinegar, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 1/4 cup ofmaple syrup,
and 3/4 cup of coffee. Add 1 1/2 pounds of bacon that has been lightly browned and drained.
Mix in two small diced onions and three garlic cloves that have been cooked until translucent.
Cook on high for four hours. Coarsely chop in a processor and serve warm on toast points.

Our camp makes a bunch of burritos and freezes them for breakfast and lunch - just grab and go. Dinners are a share thing - we're having chile one night, Indian food another, grilled salmon etc. This only covers the actual burn week, and I'll be there a few days early so I need to bring my own stuff for those days.

I'm bringing
instant oatmeal and granola bars for breakfast
A lot of biltong (South African version of jerky and infinitely better)
Vacuum pack tuna
crackers
chips
trail mix
dried fruit
hard boiled eggs
bacon
apple sauce
canned fruit (for later in the week)
hummus
some heat and serve dinners from Trader Joes
Couscous

Canned black beans, canned chili, Tasty Bite indian food.

Three years running and never done me wrong. I'm even handicapped (vegetarian), but I don't really have a camp for infrastructure (minimalist, non-theme camp) and I don't have the patience (I suffer from "oh-my-shiny!" syndrome). I'm supplemented by meals for the early entry portion of my week from my volunteering, but during the event I'm on my own. I supplement my bean/chili diet with whatever I find on the playa, and a side of non-perishable snacks like nuts, trail mix, protein bars, and more.

It's not comfortable, but it works great for me. I don't have the attention span or infrastructure to cook... so dashboard chili it is!
