The actor who played Fenrir Greyback in Harry Potter (Dave Legeno) died hiking in the desert.
Sober reminder... this isn't all games.

I'm moving this to the Open Discussion board, since that's a better fit for RIP threads and posts.
Indeed, deserts can be very dangerous places, even moreso when it's a high altitude desert or one rich in corrosive levels of alkali (such as the black rock desert). The survival guide is considered required reading for all burners, please take the time to read it.

It's sad but the Playa is far less dangerous than where he was. He was found dead possibly after 3 or 4 days by a hiker. There are so many people on Playa, literally hundreds of Rangers and LEOs with radios, and a remarkably well-equipped field hospital, that a person who collapses is highly likely to be found fairly quickly and help is quite close by. A person feeling sick, even in deep Playa, can probably wave for help and flag someone down within a minute or two. Yes, you could have a massive heart attack on Playa but the track record of Burning Man is remarkably good about heat-related deaths.

Wow, only 50 and in great shape--he probably thought he'd be fine.
It's not a bad thing if people take this seriously, Andy . . . even if you get treatment quickly, heat exhaustion can take the better part of a day away from you while they put an IV in your arm.

And remember, the goal here isn't to see how carelessly or foolishly you can prepare and still survive... it's how well you can prepare to survive (and thrive) in the environment.
