My heart goes out to Utah and the e11 burners tonight
Was scrolling threw my Facebook and I'm sad to say we have lost one of our fellow burners.
At the e11 regional burn tonight in Utah ,a gentalman made his decision that it was hit time to join the big burn in the sky. He walked into Saturday night main burn calmly and never came back out. He has been id-ed but they are not realeasing the name currently.
My thoughts and my heart go out to the Utah burner community and his friends and family. We are here for you.
Much love )'(

Re: My heart goes out to Utah and the e11 burners tonight
The "official" element 11 facebook page doesn't have anything on it, either.
I can't help being unhelpful here.
First, this wouldn't have happened at Flipside. There was a ring of firemen and security keeping the crowd back. And EMS at the ready.
Stoners are completely foreseeable, and completely unpredictable.
Second, I am curious what would be considered a disgusting post. Burners seem to accept vulgarity, misogyny, and bigotry as part of conversation... It must be really REALLY bad.
So sorry (sympathy and grief)... what an awful thing to witness. You know there were kids in the crowd...
So selfish to ruin everyone elses' burn.

Someone made that exact comment on facebook and the shit storm started.
Everyone feels differently and can't understand why everyone doesn't agree with their personal perspective, so they all started slinging poo at each other.

Its always a sad thing to lose a brother in arms. Its even sadder when they do it so very publically. Invariably its the folks left behind that suffer: The family, parents, campmates... and my heart goes out to all of them.

I think the Flipside comparison is out of line as well. Regional events are not a competitive sport, and often times when a person intends to cause self-harm it can be difficult, if not impossible to stop them. My deepest sympathies to everyone involved and affected, from the individual's friends and family to the E11 crew and participants.

"Can't really feel bad for that person if he/she did it on purpose. Only an asshole would do something like this at a public event. Sorry."
"Fucking wow. anyone who does that is not only stupid but inconsiderate of others who want to keep participating in events like this. Go burn yourself in your fucking house if your gonna do it. dont fuck us over. The rave gods are pissed right now"
"assholes jump in the fire. Nice people slit their wrists at home."
And for what it is worth I don't just accept misogyny or bigotry and I'd encourage others not to either.

While I'd make an absolutely crap counselor of any kind, this also serves as a somber reminder as we're planning our burn that it's important to look out for our campmates and friends. The week can take its toll on us physically, mentally, and emotionally - keep an eye on each other and do what you can to make sure everyone's rested, hydrated, fed, and otherwise feeling alright.

I'm the burn night perimeter lead for Flipside. I've been the lead for the past 4 years and worked the line for 2 years before that.
It most definitely COULD happen at Flipside, which is why we discuss the issue and the steps we would take when I'm giving training to the people that work perimeter. The perimeter is established to prevent people from getting too close to the effigy. Usually Flipside's effigies are "self-regulating" - in other words the heat coming off the effigy as it burns is usually enough to push people back on their own. But there is a line of volunteers established to help keep everyone at a safe distance away. Not one person working the line is a security guard. The line is comprised of Rangers (not security) DAFT (Design and Fabrication Team) volunteers, Medics, and Shaven Apes (general construction/ handyman folks). There are no "security" personnel.
The firemen are watching the fire. Everyone else is watching the participants.
If I spot someone break the line and charge towards the effigy, you can bet that I will have no problem doing my best to subdue this person - so long as I am near them. The general rule is that if a "runner" is spotted, we do our best to prevent them from hurting themselves, but we do not jeopardize our own personal safety for the sake of someone that is determined to pull something like this.
That is not how a typical stoner operates. There are many drugs that might allow someone with pre-conceived suicidal tendencies to want to do something like this, but marijuana is usually not one of them.Sunbeam56 wrote: Stoners are completely foreseeable, and completely unpredictable.

there is no right.
there is no wrong.
there just is.
judge not.
look away, there is nothing to see here.
how would you feel as survivors, if people were discussing your private shit in forums everywhere.
my heart goes out to the parents, and the family and the friends.
they know the story, we don't.
i think, IMHO that discussion of this is probably best done in private....just a thought, i don't know, maybe i am wrong.

Thank you, Trilobyte.
We love our community and want everyone to have a good time. We do our best to prevent people from getting too close to the fire, but if someone is determined, we do not risk our own personal safety in the process.

Re: My heart goes out to Utah and the e11 burners tonight
Thank you trilo, that is certainly one lesson here: to look out for one another.
Strange how some expect humans in what must be extreme and unfathomable pain to be considerate, or even cognizant, of other people's feelings. We don't think twice about an animal in pain biting the people who try to help it.
Very sad, and I send my prayers for friends, and family members, and those who witnessed.

Maybe he just wanted to spend his last moments and die among friends.
Personally, I don't find anything wrong with what he did.

Re: My heart goes out to Utah and the e11 burners tonight
I wonder how many folks got injured at the Utah event trying to get him out. I can only imagine our burn perimeter crew would move Heaven and Earth trying to get to him, even at risk of injury, but after a few seconds it would not be a survivable situation.

I haven't heard anything about this, however it seems like thoughts, prayers, or however you roll, are in order.
Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

Re: My heart goes out to Utah and the e11 burners tonight
I was there, in the circle, with the conclave. A lot of you can SHUT THE FUCK UP. If you think it could never happen at your event, you are fucking stupid. We had perimeter, good people, plenty of them, and a very traumatized conclave member who nearly got a grip on his ankle as he blew by. The heat was enormous, so any thought of going in is ridiculous, he dove into the heart of intense heat, and was likely dead in a moment. The Grantsville fire department was there, fully suited up, and they could do nothing even though they tried. They are small town, and always attend our events and love them, and interact with us. We are all fucking sick this happened.

There is nothing on the E-11 page because all the board of directors are still on site, I just walked in the door myself. While the media was not allowed to enter the event venue, I did see a news chopper overhead this morning. We will hear about it.

Our hearts are with you M. I was hoping against hope that it was all internet rumors. I've been sending you all my love since I heard. I'm sorry you saw this and. Pray for some peace for his family, friends, and all the people at e11 who were witnesses to this tragedy.
